19 Month Old with Yeast Infection

My 19 month old girl was on antiboitics for three weeks for her ear infection. Now she has a yeast infection. Her diaper is irritating her and she now has red bumps and pulls at her diaper. Her pediatrician said to put on an anti fungal twice a day and give her yogurt with live cultures (which she has always had daily). Has anyone had to treat this? Is there anything else I should or shouldn't do? I can only imagine how uncomfortable she is. Thanks.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Thanks for all the great advice. I'm staying at my Mom's while we do some kitchen improvements so leaving the diaper off is not an option right now. I am giving her a little time in between changes to let her dry out. The anti fungal cream has cleared up some of the bumps and I've stopped using her baby wipes unless she is poopy. We are going to look for some probiotics to add to her juice when we get back to Royal Oak. Thanks again - you guys are great! Just what a new mommy needs. :)

My 16 month old daughter recently had a yeast infection too. In addition to the anti-fungal cream, we put a bit of baking soda in her bath water (that helps with diaper rash too) and let her run around for a few minutes at diaper changes to air her out. Unfortunately it took longer than the Dr. said it would to go away, but now after maybe 3 weeks of fighting it she is completely better. Good luck,

My son had had yeast infections and when I brought him to the doctor they perscribed a anti-fungal cream, Nystatan. It can be found in all the over the counter yeast creams, like monostat. I also gave him a baking soda bath to calm the irritation. Give her tylenol or ibprofen for the pain. It really helps.

Hi A..
I have a 22 mth old daughter and about 4 months ago she devolped what the doctors called a yeast infection too. I tried everything under the sun to clear this up. I did use the anti-fungal medicine and it did work alittle, but what i found to work the best was nothing but Gold Bond powder. Another thing to try to protect it from getting irriated any more is to apply a thick amount of vaseline. I found these 2 things very helpful, but i HIGHLY recommend the Gold Bond powder. Good luck

This happened to my daughter when she was about this age. The doctor initially gave me a steroid cream (I don't know why he thought this would help) and I wouldn't give it to her, so he said to soak a cloth diaper in vinigar and put it in her diaper a couple of times a day. I think I did this for a couple of days and it started to go away. Also, if she's got yeast on her skin, she probably has it in her body. Yeast doesn't go away as long as refined carbs and all forms of sugar are taken out of the diet. Better to do this now while she's young and can argue less. Take all snacks and pop out of the house. If she's been on antibiotics, or especially during use of antibiotics and antifungals, she needs to be taking a probiotic every day to rebalance the flora in her intestines. She's probably dysbiotic. The natural flora in our gut keeps yeast and other bacteria in check, and when we take antibiotics or antifungals, or eat too many sweets and refined carbs, we throw the balance out and the yeast takes over. Once you have that fungal infection, it starts to dig in to your intestinal walls and makes little holes which open you up to food allergies, IBS, Chrone's, etc. Not to mention the inflammation in your body that will cause chronic pain. This takes time, of course, but if you don't get the candida in check, it will happen. I'm a living example, and so is my daughter. But try to take sugar away from a life-long carb addict and a 15 year old! I recommend looking up Candida online. Hope this helps!

instead of using another medicine that has its own set of side effects, go for an infant probiotic. you can get them at a natural food store, usually in the cooler. they are great for the immune system in general and definately help with yeast. there are no side effects (unless you take too much, follow dosage directions) and it is all natural!

My daughter had frequent problems with yeast infections. Her pediatrician prescribed a cream as well (Ketacanazole?)
The best thing I can suggest is to let her air out as much as possible, frequent changes, blotting vs. hard wiping and make sure she is dry before you close her diaper. I used to blow down there. A friend of mine used a blowdrier on low, cool setting. Whatever works!!!

My advice is pretty lowkey. I have 4 children, and a couple of them, including a boy, were prone to yeast infections. Make sure you apply the cream generously everywhere where she has the bumps and around those areas so it doesn't spread. The drier you can keep her, even if you can leave her diaper off for a little while, the better: yeast grows best in moist conditions. Some friends of mine, when the infection was too bad, would put the yogurt (plain, obviously) directly on the infection.

Have you tried putting just corn starch on the red bumps...try that. Always worked for me. Anytime mine had trouble it was corn starch...you just pat it on the area. Let air get to the diaper area too.

hi! my daughter is 19 months old as well and continues getting yeast infections. her Ped. wrote a prescription for nystatin...and said to put it on for 10 days but also just a cpl extra days bc It could take awhile for it to completely heal up and be gone. the yogurt is a great idea I was giving it to my daughter 2x a day and when I slack off is when the infection comes back. Also, its esp hard in the winter bc more than likely shes all bundled up so her body has no room to breathe...but yes the meds and keep her as dry as possible at all times (its hard I know!) but Im really hoping that when the warmer weather rolls around in shes not in layers that will help. I think some kids are more prone to things than others but the steps you are taking seem great as well...
