14 Month Old Not Walking yet..is It Ok?

Hi! I have a 20 month old (as well as a 4 y/0 & 11 y/o). My oldest walked by the time he was like 10 1/2 months old. My youngest son started walking about 14 months & my daughter wasn't until she was 15 months old. I too worried about my younger two but the doctor told me that if they didn't walk by 18 months then we'd go from there (remember, every doctor is different about sending you to a specialist). I'd just give it some more time & try not to worry too much.

I have 3 daughters who are now 13, 16 and 19. Same gender, same parents, etc. They each did everything in their own time. The eldest walked before she was one, the middle one showed no interest in walking till 15 months. The range of toilet training age was 21 months to 3 years! My eldest, who is now an honor student at University was a very delayed reader and while I was struggling to get her caught up with her 2nd grade classmates, her sister taught herself to read whole books at age 4. The national average for reading is 6, and in the end that is exactly what I had because my three read comfortable at ages 8, 4 & 6. If you look at the averages, someone has to be in the more delayed end to balance the kids who do things early. Relax. If he's walking pushing things, he's still walking. That means he has the leg strength to support himself and he is developmentally right there. Sounds to me like he is just more cautious than his older brother and that's what mom needs. Two risk-takers less than a year apart would be a headache!!!
Enjoy them, it goes much too fast and then they are teenagers! Ugh!

Hi N., Please don't worry, your son is fine. The walking varies per child. If you are really concerned talk with your pediatrician but I can tell you that he/she is going to say what everyone else here is saying, so save yourself the co-pay. As for a specialist... not yet, not even close. Enjoy this stage becuase when they both are walking your going to wish things could go back to having at least one where you left him.

Hi I have a 2 year old daughter who did not walk till about 14 and half months I was also worried but the Dr said it was normal.

My son who is now five couldn't walk until he was exactly 16 months! He didn't say much more than "momma" until he was two. My pediatrician said it wasn't a concern (the walking) until my son turned 18 months. I really wouldn't worry if I was you. I have four children. They all walked at diffent times.

You said that your son was walking while holding onto something; well thats walking. I know thats not the same as without anything; however if it concerns you, next time you see his doctor ask him about it. Also, I heard to be concerned if he/she is 18 months.

I hope this helps. My son walked early holding his walking thing around the house; also he would take a chair at a very young age and walk back and forth, back and forth. He would also take the cabinet drawer and do the same thing. It was too funny.

Yes - do not worry. My friends and everyone had me crazy. My son walked before a year and was walking with help at 9 months, so when my daughter wasn't even pulling up at a year I got really nervous. My doctor prescribed PT, which we went to once and paid $250 for. They recommended her to come twice a week (at 200 per week). I asked what would this do for her - they said get her to walk earlier. I figured what is the point. Anyway, she walked at 16 months (without PT) and is now 18 months and runs, climbs and is even more daring than my son was at that age. So just sit back and enjoy your baby being a baby. They grow up so fast :) AND - don't read the baby center guidelines or threads with people bragging about how early their kids walked and talked. It will make you crazy.

My now 14 yr old son walked at 18 months just in time for his daddy's birthday. My daughter walked right at 12 months. I really don't think you have need to worry. All babies reach their milestones at their own pace. I am certain he will walk soon. Just relax and enjoy your baby.

Don't worry I am the mother of three girls 6, 4, and 18 months and my middle daughter never crawled just scooted around on her bottom and didn't start walking until she was 16 months. We were starting to worry about her because she wasn't even acting like she wanted to walk. Then literally one day we woke up and she just took off walking. So I know it's hard not to compare your kids with others, but try not to and just let them develop on their own. However our pediatric doctor did say if she didn't start walking by 17 months you should have an eval by early intervention just to make sure everything is fine.
