My kinder boy and my pre-k girl are starting school. YAY! One step closer to no daycare. My boy will be in school until 3 and YMCA afterschool care afterward. But my girl gets out at 12:30. The y doesn't take pre-k and doesnt start until 3. I think I'm going to take my lunch at 12:30 and drive her to her regular provider until I pick her up at 5. But beween gas, after school care and paying her regular provider, I'm not going to be saving any money. How do other working moms handle half school days?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Once school starts and We make a few friends, I may be able to spot a resource. But for now, we've never been to this school and don't know any moms. I'll call the office and ask. I think for now, I'll just pick her up and take her over there. I can't believe I'm going from 2 kids in full time daycare to 1 in after school care for 2 hours and one doing half a day daycare, but it looks like my cost will be the same or more! uggh.

Some parents pay other parents to drive their children to their child care..

Do you know any other parents that will be picking up their preK also?.. Maybe a stay at home parent would like a little extra money each week, driving your child..

Maybe call the school and see if they know of a parent you could approach.. Many times at schools, their are parents that have had a few children at a school long enough the office knows them and can give references.. Otherwise see if once school starts if there is a parent that could help out..

See if there is a PTA newsletter you could place a little ad.

I wrangle my friend FOUR kids to FOUR different schools with staggered start times. They pay me to get their butts up and moving and drive them off to school. I like the extra money and they appreciate knowing THIS will be done and on time. Their kids are SLOW moving in the morning.

Perhaps you have a friend that can help out?

Our area has something called a Kid Kab, which will transport kids from one school to an after school place. Wonder if there might be a similar service in your area so that you don't have to rely on other parents.

Our private daycares have buses that will pick the kids up and take them back to the center.

You might even find a teacher that could drive her to your regular provider or maybe even want to watch her until 5.

Are there any moms that have kids in the same school that could drop her off at her regular sitter for you? Maybe you could even do a trade and keep her kids some on the weekends or whenever you don't work in trade for her dropping your child off? That way you're not out the money.

Why doesn't your child care provider provide transportation? I know most do. It is harder to get a person to do this during lunch time and such but still. They should be willing to do this. What about asking a teacher there that you trust to pick her up and transport her from school to the center, maybe on their lunch break. You could pay them a few dollars per week to cover their gasoline expense. I would always make sure the director was on board for this too. It may be against company policy. They have to have some sort of plan at some center that takes the pre-K kids.
