My 13 month old daughter has switched from formula to milk without any problem... except that she will only drink it from a bottle!!! She drinks water from a sippy all day, but when we put milk into a sippy she spits it out and throws the sippy cup. Finally we tried to just NOT give her a bottle, and for 3 days straight she drank NO MILK! Then she got really sick with an ear infection so I caved and gave her a bottle and she downed like 16 ounces....HELP! I need ANY ideas and suggestions for getting her to like the milk from a sippy cup. Thanks so much!

So What Happened?

Thank you all so much for your support and suggestions! The day after her ear infection was diagnosed, we decided to only give her a sippy cup with milK (no water AT ALL) and she went all day without drinking UNTIL-------YAHOO! She finally picked up her sippy cup right before bed and drank the whole thing! She's been drinking out of a sippy cup ever since! (Well, as least over the last two days!) Thanks again for being so kind to help me! YEA!!!

Don't give her water in a sippy, just give her milk until she gets used to it. When she gets thirsty, she'll drink it. Don't give in to her again because if you do, you're basically letting her control you, and therefore she'll manipulate you into giving in to her over and over.

If you offer her milk ONLY in a sippy cup and not water or juice she will eventually get thirsty and drink it. If she only has one choice she probably won't pass it up! Also have you tried flavoring the milk with Chocolate or Strawberry?? They make sugar-free!

I had the same problem with my twins when they were around that age. I found sippy cups that had a top like a straw (except that they did not have to keep it upright like a cup with a straw). They have them at Walmart and they are pretty cheep. I found that my girls took those without a problem and we then transitioned into the regular sippy cups.

Throw the bottles away, all of them. If she don't drink milk out of a sippy, thats okay. Give her a regular cup with supervision and praise her for drinking out of it. If you keep caving in by giving her a bottle, it will only get harder to break her. Throw them out! She will eventually drink from it. It may be hard for a few days, but she will forget about about the bottle alot sooner if you do it now instead of waiting until she gets older. They get more attached to things as they grow!!! Good Luck. If your worried about her not getting milk products, supplement with cheese, cottage cheese etc.. She will be fine!

B.... oh how funny!! my daughter is 14 months and we did the same thing with her except at 12 months. Same thing she would spit it and throw the cup.. I looked at her & i'm like 'oh no u didn't!" i had her pick the cup up and I set it down. She refused it at first, but she would walk away and I would set it down and say "this is all your getting" and then I would walk away to the living room or where ever. Next thing you know she went back to the kitchen and grabbed the sippy of milk and brought out to the living room. I didn't stand over her to make her drink i just sat it down and walk away to let her know that that was all that she was getting. We first had her on a nuby cup that was for milk only and the actual sippy was for everything else. about 3 weeks ago we started her on the sippy for milk too.. She didn't want it at first, but same idea and now she takes it. Good luck

Hello B.! Although my son drank soy milk, he too would only drink from the bottle. Sometimes if I heated up the milk he would take it from a sippy cup, but usually he refused. Never fear though, eventually he drank from the sippy cup. Just be patient and keep offering the sippy and one day he will suprise you and take it! Don't sweat the small stuff! Good luck!

My pediatrician said 15 months is natural for them to have the bottle. Mine had her bottle a little longer than that with the second stage soy formula due to milk allergies. I think they associate the milk with formula and want it only from the bottle. After all, that is all they have known all their life and what we have taught them. Sounds like you are doing a great job. Your baby is so young, they grow up fast! Don't rush the baby :)

Has she ever tried drinking from a straw? There are straw sippy cups on the market that flip up and the straw is a soft plastic similar to a bottle nipple. My kids always loved straws. They are easy to travel with too. The straw flips and closes the sippy. Voila!

My son didn't take to a sippy cup right away either. I tried a few brands and had the best luck with Nuby sippy cups. Now he's 16mo. and will use almost any cup.

Good Luck
