Which Dog Breed - Schnoodle or Mini Schnauzer?

We have 3 daughters aged 9, 6 and 2. We also have one big dog (100 lbs) who is very gentle with them and a great dog but she doesn't really like to interact or play with the kids. I would like to add a smaller dog to the family who is more kid-oriented. One of our friends has a mini schnauzer who was fantastic with the kids. Do any of you have any experience with mini schnauzers or schnoodles? I love to train dogs so I'm looking for an intelligent dog who loves kids. Can you recommend any other small dog breeds or good breeders of schnauzers or schnoodles?

What can I do next?

Go to the pound & pick up a dog that someone has dumped!!! All breeders inbreed, thats where health problems develop...
OR, call a rescue, there are PLENTY of great dogs within the system...
Also, it is known that smaller dogs are not that good with kids, unless it is very well trained.

H.,
I do have 4 children of my own 14-19 and I have done in home daycare for 19 years. In all these years I have found pugs to be the best over all dogs. They are small yet hearty and so full of life. They don't seem to have mean bone in their bodies. I have 2 pug mixes 1 pure bread and I have a lab mix. All of them are rescue except the pure bread(only because we lost our pure bread rescue in January. we were all so empty with out her even the other dogs we got crazy and went and bought one. She fits right in easy to train and great with all the kids ranging from 8 weeks-adults. I also have a preference for the black ones( they seem smarter) and I am a female dog owner. Although i just adopted a male who makes 4 for us from a friend. Good luck to you in whatever you choose.

We recently added 2 mini schnauzers to our family. I have 2 girls, 2 and 5 yrs and the puppies are wonderful with the girls. Both puppies are very sweet and seem intelligent. We were able to teach them a few commands with very little training. They love to play and overall are very clean puppies. My brother in law also has 2 small children and a mini schnauzer and he loves his schnauzer as well. I would highly suggest a mini schnauzer of course you still need to be careful about the parents and the puppy's temperament. Have fun. :)

Hey H.! I grew up with a cocker spaniel and it was a great dog all growing up. They have boundless energy but aren't destructive. My husband and I bought one when we first got married and have had her as we have expanded our family. She is so great with my kids who are now 3 and 2. She has never shown any aggression even when they are a little too rough with her. She is a great dog and I would recommend a cocker spaniel to anyone with kids. They are excellent family dogs.

We have 3 dachshunds and they are a lot of fun. Our kids are 12 and 10, but we have had one of the dogs since the kids were 7 and 9. The kids just have to remember to pick the dogs up using 2 hands so they don't hurt the dog's back. Our kids have been great with them. I would recommend the smooth hair dachshunds just for ease in grooming and since the summers are so hot. They also have mini and standard size. Our male is a standard and he weighs 20 pounds. Our girls dogs are minis and weigh only 8.

My sister bred schnauzers and they were a little nippy and tended to be grouchy. I know this isn't all dogs, but that is my experience with them. We also had mini poodles and they were dumb as rocks, plus you have grooming issues with poodles....and schnauzers.

I do not know about those two breeds but you might look into the Boston Terrior Bulldog. I have had one of those before. They are easy to train, great family pets. They are always doing silly things to get attention and are fantastic with kids.

I don't know what a schnoodle is so can't give insight, but I would not reccommend a schnauzer with kids they are very timid dogs & do have a tendacy to snap alot.. I have had several family & friends who had them but had to get rid of when they had kids because they didn't do well with them..

Hi there, How about rescuing a lil guy? My in-laws have 2 mini schnauzers and they are very LOUD and not at all good with kids!!! Did you know mutts are smarter then purbreds? We are the proud owners of a 150 pd. choc lab and a 75 pd. black lab mix doggie (whom we rescued) never had better dogs in the world! Good luck and really really think hard about saving one! xoxo J.

I have had both and think that the mini-schnauzer is wonderful. They are bright, loving, and a whole lot of fun with the kids. As long as they are trained properly and the kids are too you'll have a great family pet.

We have a Shetland Sheepdog (aka Sheltie/miniature collie)that is absolutely fantastic with the kids. I had one when I was a kid. Before getting a dog for our family I bought a book on dog breeds to see if there may be another breed that would be great for families and kept seeing Sheltie as great around kids and families. They are very tolerant dogs - kids can dress them up, little kids pull their ears, etc. and they put up with it all and they are very intelligent and easy to train. Lots of breeds out there- hope you find the right one for your family.

We have 3 girls and are on our second set of mini schnauzers.
The first set we got before the kids and, while they were fine with the kids, they didn't interact with them much.
The second set we got after the kids and they are great with them!
My daughters trained them and even did agility with them for awhile.
Schnauzers have energy when you want them to but are very calm level-headed dogs the rest of the time. We take ours camping and on road trips and they do great in the car.
They basically just consider themselves family members and fit in with whatever you are doing.
When trained correctly they have excellent potty habits and house manners.
They like to talk and will carry on conversations with you if you let them. ;)
We originally got ours because my husband wanted tough dogs to go camping and hiking with us and I wanted small, non-shedding. I don't know if I'll ever get another breed now.

I think schnoodles could be great too but I don't have experience with them.
Good Luck,
B.

I also think it's great to rescue a dog. One of our schnauzers was from Cactus State Min. Schnauzer rescue (Now AZ schnauzer rescue). She's a great dog and we know her personality when we got her because she was grown.

Schnauzers are wonderful dogs for children!! They are so sweet and even tempermented. Although I believe adopting is the best way to go, getting a puppy might be a good route for you so the dog will grow with your children. Also these are dogs that train really well because they are so smart!!! Good luck!

Schnauzers are great dogs, and they train pretty easily. Keep in mind they need regular hair cuts and should be brushed from time to time. Shitzu's are also great with kids, and they also need regular hair cuts and daily brushing.

I have a maltese, he is tiny and delicate and high maintenance. I would NOT recommend him to a family with young kids. A small child can accidently hurt a dog this tiny without meaning too.

I have a niece that has two little children plus she is a foster mom to one child right now. She has two mini schnauzer dogs. She says that these dogs are amazing around children and that she will never own any other type of dog but these.

Good luck in your search!!!

I have a mini schnauzer, two schnoodles and a yorkie. The schnauzer is my second one (the first lived to be 17.5 years old) and my mother also has a mini schnauzer (and a huge fan of them.) We got our first schnoodle 11 years ago and mated her with the schnauzer (hence the second schnoodle.) The yorkie was an after thought.

The schnauzers are great because of their loyalty and friendliness. I don't see too much difference in personalities between the schnoodles and schnauzer, all exhibiting mostly the schnauzer traits. They are very vocal dogs and love kids.

The yorkie is our first and he is much more emotional than the schnauzers. I will say that he loves my daughter immensely and wants to be near her all of the time, moreso than the others...a true lap dog. He is far more dependent, but his cuteness makes up for it. As for a kid dog, the yorkie is great because he wants her affection all of the time, whereas the schnauzer is content just being in the same room as a person.

All three types make great pets. Hope this helps.
