I have a 16 month old son and I was just wondering when I should move him to a toddler bed? I have a friend, actually my in-home daycare provider, that has a son just about a month younger than my son and she has already switched him to a toddler bed. She says he stays in it, but I don't see my son staying in his if I were to switch him. He is very restless when he sleeps and is all over the crib now. I was just wondering. Thanks in advance.
My daughter was in hers until she turned 2. Actually 3 days after she turned 2 she climbed out of her crib 8 times in 1 night, so I said that was it! I will wait until my son figures out how to do the same then I will change him out. If he is restless, I would wait a bit.
Hi! My name is K., I'm a 32 yr old mom w/ 3 boys - 11, 7 & my youngest who is 2. We switched all our sons into toddler beds when they turned one. My youngest son, was a challenge because he is alot more "lively" than most kids. haha. He is a bundle of energy from the minute he wakes to the moment he falls asleep. The trick is YOU. You have to be deligent and stern about him staying in his bed when it's time for him to go to sleep. I don't know if he has his own room or if he is still in your room - if he has his own room, get a child-proof door knob and put it on the inside of his room and leave him alone - he will fall asleep. If he is in your room, then, you must stay in your room and keep telling him to lay down until he falls asleep. After a while, he will figure it out and it will be okay. I hope this helps. :)
Hello! My children are grown, (my youngest is 16), However, my advice to you would be to wait until you feel the child is ready. Don't look at what other children are doing. Each child has his or her own personality, wants and needs. If you force him, then it will become a nightmare for both of you. I once heard a saying, "Don't raise the child you want, raise the child you have". It took me a long time to understand that, it is a very wise saying. I wish you all the luck in the world with your beautiful family.
My pediatrician advised waiting until a child is try to get out of the crib (for safety.) My healthy little toddler is almost 3 and she has never tried getting out, only getting into the crib by steping up on the side. She's so used to calling me or my husband to get her out of the crib. We have a toddler bed and will eventually switch over, but for now, she's fine in the crib.
As one other person noted, if the child can get up from a bed, there's other risks such as running around the house, etc. for which a new routine must be established.
One year is much too young in my opinion.
probably once he's climbing out of his crib is my feeling. Once they are loose in the room you have a whole new routine to work out.

I like to keep my babies/toddlers 'in' things for as long as possible, lol.
(Example: I have a Britax marathon car seat & it has certain limits for how long you can keep a child rear-facing- well I kept my son rear-facing until he was about 2 & 1/2...)
so my answer would be to keep toddler in crib until closer to 2 & 1/2 or even 3 (but I'm weird, lol)

If you don't think he's ready, he's probably not...Most advice seems to say between the ages of 2 and 3...My daughter was about 2 years and 4 months when we switched her to a toddler bed. We had to get a guardrail, though, as she is still a very rough sleeper. I'd say wait at least another year!
