When Did You Begin Using a Pillow for Your Todder?

My 23 month old daughter is very happy in her crib and loves to sleep with her pink Gerber waffle blanket - not over her - she just likes to hold it or have it be next to her. Lately she's been bunching it up and using it as a pillow. Is it safe to let her use a pillow and if so does anyone have any recommendations?

Everything I read says to not let kids use a pillow until their in a toddler bed but she's really happy in her crib (never tries to get out) and I figured I'd take advantage of that as long as I could :)

Thank you!

What can I do next?

Hi T.,
At 2 years old a small pillow is probably ok. They are more concerned with infants having pillows because they can suffocate. A 2 year old can lift her head or roll over if the pillow is on her face. (And she can throw it at you!) I bought my son a really small pillow - about the size of an airplane pillow when he was 2.

Have you asked your daughter if she wants a pillow? She may say no and just want to sleep with her blanket as a pillow.

Good luck!

My daughter asked for a pillow and she loves it. She also sleeps in her crib and i find what works best is a queen size pillow that is meant for a back sleeper. It is flat and it spans the width of the crib exactly - which for some reason makes me feel better.
You'll know what's right.

i was told its okay so long as they can lift their head and move it or get away from it if need be, and im sure your 23 month old can do that.

My kids were around your daughter's age when they got their first pillows. I'd recommend getting a kid sized pillow from One Step Ahead - they're small, hypoallergenic, and you can have your daughter's name embroidered on the pillowcase. My oldest (6 1/2) still prefers her little pillow to an adult sized one, and they both took their pillows to school for naptime. Congratulations on having a child happy in her crib.

I'm responding to see what the other responses are. My daughter is 21 months old and seems to want a pillow as well.
