What's Going On?

Okay, so I am on my third week of weaning my 21 month old and I am impatiently awaiting my period. With my first, I weaned at 20 months and I can't remember for sure but I thought that I got my period a few months before I weaned him, I at least spotted. So, I am getting anxious and nervous about not having anything! (we will be trying for our third)
I have recenlty lost 28 pounds, so am 148 (not skinny), in 16 weeks from Weight Watchers and am working out an hour on the elliptical with weights and abs every other day. Does anyone know that if that is a factor or am I just over reacting and I need to let my hormones balance out? Anyone else with this problem, current or past?

What can I do next?

I started my period with both my kids were 13 months and I nursed my daughter until she was 2 1/2 yrs. I think 13 months is the average although some women (like you) don't start their periods until completely after weaning. I would definitely say the weight loss could have something to do with not starting your period yet either. Although you do not consider yourself skinny, that is almost 20% of your body weight that you lost. Hormone balances change drastically. I would just say use some form of birth control if you aren't already and just relax, your body is probably just trying to get back in the rhythm.

I was never very regular after my pregnancies. I don't know if it's hormones or what but I never worried.

Hi K.!
I wouldn't worry too much. I didn't start my period until I had stopped breastfeeding. Even then it was two to three months later. With both of my boys. If you are worried...call your doctor. That is what they are there for. Good Luck!

My step mom got pregnant with my second oldest step sister when she was breast feeding, so i hope your using some sort of birth control.... although, weight loss can be a big cause of the period being absent also.

I wouldn't worry too much about getting your period just yet; as I am sure you are aware you can get pregnant without having a regular period. I got mine about 2 months after I stopped breastfeeding and then only once in the next 2 months and we got pregnant again somewhere in between! (unfortunately I miscarried; not related to weaning, I have a history of them) so I know it is very possible to get pregnant without having a period. Congrats on the weightloss, I am struggling with that myself! But you are losing weight steadily not super-fast so I wouldn't think the no-period thing is related to that. I would just let nature take its course and enjoy the period free time while it lasts! Of course if you don't see one within the next few months I would see a doc just to be on the safe side.
Good luck with the weight loss and future pregnancy.

I didint start menstruating again till 3 or 4 months after I stopped breastfeeding. If you are anxious and suspicious of any problems you should really bring the concern to your physician!
