What Do You Recommend as a Starter Sippy Cup?

for the first sippy cup, I always look for one that somewhat emulates a bottle. meaning it is a soft spout and child gets liquid by tilting and sucking the spout, not a straw based.
Eventually we moved to a straw, but those were my only criteria for the first cups.
I did see an excellent selection on the Daily Candy kids email a few months ago (they archive them on their site dailycandy.com) and it was a great listing of sippy cups and converting regular cups to sippy cups,e tc. You might want to take a gander to see if you like any there:)

I used the Nuby ones with my daughter (my son wasn't so into them) but they are more like a bottle nipple. The only bad thing is they do sort of leak so you have to be careful. I think it would be fine in your case to start out since you'll probably be doing some of the holding of it, just watch him if he drops it or throws it to pick it up before it spills/leaks! I also like the Gerber hard plastic ones too for when they get the hang of it. They don't leak at all, as long as the valve is in, and are really great with the double handles! The same ones have lasted through both my kids so far!

Crazy as it sounds, my daughter loved a sippy cup and didn't like a bottle. since I nursed her anyway, she had a sippy cup for juice, water, and eventually milk. I don't think he's too young, I think she started on it at 5 months. I bought a brand that was the most like a bottle and had a slow flow opening.

I started giving my daughter (now 1 yr) a sippy cup just to play with and get familiar with around 6 months. She didn't really take any interest in it until recently. Thankfully, she seems to actually like water...it probably helps that my husband and I drink insane amounts of water and are constantly refilling our Nalgenes or stainless steel water bottles. I tried the kind that has the two handles, but it only holds a few ounces and after the first few sips, she has a hard time holding and tilting the cup back to get anything. Although she's kind of lazy about it even with her bottle of milk. She CAN hold it herself, but prefers for us to do it for her. HOWEVER, she's doing really well with the Munchkin sippy cup. I can't remember the exact name, but it's contoured in the middle for an easy grip (no handles) and taller than the other one. The doctor said she should have about 4 oz water/day right now and she's easily doing that with this new cup. Doesn't seem to leak either which I like very much!

We got our guy the Born Free bottles . Thy have sippy cup inserts for it, training handles, and a silky slipper cover for the glass bottles. They have two sippy cup spouts to choose from.. a slow flow for beginners and a fast flow for the more advanced. Out seven month old is just starting to try drinking water from it and is doing great.

I think it's great to start him now. I started both my kids at 5 1/2 - 6 mo. b/c I nursed exclusively...both of them refused a bottle. I would not buy anything with a rubber-like top. My daughter got her 1st tooth at 3 1/2 mo. old. Once she started teething she started pulling on the tops of the sippy cups & ripping the rubber off.

I loved the Avent sippy cup attachment that went on the Avent bottles. It has easy-grip handles and a soft, cushioney drinking spout. My youngest drank her bottles at 4 months old but because she had older siblings that drank from cups, she woke up one day at 9 months old and refused to take the bottle anymore. Every beverage had to be in a cup or she would cry until I put it in there. My baby didn't stay a bottle baby for long. I used two kind of sippy cups....the Avent and Playtex sippy cups. Both were dishwasher safe and both found a purpose in my home. Try these. I think you will love them.

He is at a great age to start the sippy cup! We used the Playtex soft spout with two handles on it (Playtex 1st Sipster) and LOVED them! My son very quickly took to them, and could hold it on his own soon after we started using them. They will always be our first choice for the first sippy cup! Have fun!

He's not too young. My kids ped told me to use one cuz they wouldn't take the bottle either. You and your husband will have to help him get the hang of it at first but once he figures out there's something yummy in there, he'll catch on fast.

Brest Fed Babies are Best Fed Babies!

My son likes the new Tommee Tippee designed for 4+ months. He was having trouble getting the liquid out from other sippers (has solely nursed), but took to the Tommee Tippee immediately. Something about the patented design of the tip makes it easier for breastfed babies to get the liquid out of the sipper. I found it at Toys R Us about 3 months ago, and for some reason Babies R Us did not carry it. I couldn't find it online either. But this was 3 months ago, so maybe things have changed.... I also tried getting him to drink from a straw, which he does do, but he hasn't figured out how to control/stop the flow on his own. My two girls figured out the straw, bypassed sipper cups and went straight to straw cups - so that might be an option for you too. Good luck!
