Is 19 pounds a fair weight for a toddler 12 to 14mos old? Ped claim he was below the 10th percentile or something like that, just wondering what other moms experienced with their babies and if they were concerned or not.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for your responses moms. He is breastfed, is walking, talking one or two words and understands very well, so I will not worry so much.

The girl I babysit for will be 1 tomorrow. She weighs 20 pounds on the dot as of yesterday. If he is developing normally and not delayed and is a good eater (not picky or sensory issues) then let it be. His body will grow in the way it is supposed to. Drs think they have complete control over everything....and guess what? THEY DON'T! We have an epidemic of overweight kids and adults in this country because of a horrible diet and lifestyle. Let him be.....

Completely depends on their size, and how well they're thriving. My 6month old was 25 lbs (10lbs 23" long at birth)... and has always been off the USA charts (is middling on the Scandinavian charts).

A child in the 90th for height and 10th for weight is extremely concerning... but a child in the 5th-15th for height, and 10th for weight is doing fantastic.

It's fine! My son was 19.5 lbs. at 12 months old. My daughter the same. Both were in the 5th-10th percentile. As long as he's developing on schedule, do not worry. Those ped. charts are based on formula fed babies. I nursed exclusively so my babies were always in the lower percentiles.

My oldest, until recently, has always been under the 10th percentile for weight. He was an extremely active boy - even as a baby he was constantly moving some part of his body. My pediatrician was never concerned as long as he was getting the nutrients he needed. My son is now 6 and is in the 50th % for weight. This only happened over about the last 6 months. His growth actually scared us!! It was over night.

Don't be concerned unless he isn't eating well. Make sure to give him vitamins as well.

Do not worry. My son was 19 lbs at one, 21 lbs. at 2 & is now 27 lbs (& will be 3 in June). YES, he is small- but my husband & I were small as toddlers (both above average now), He was small at birth & is on a steady curve. He walked at 10 months, speaks like a 4 or 5 year old & potty trained at 2.
I also breastfed for 18 months & I think it makes them healthy- but also makes it so they are thinner (less chunky).

At 12-14 months- as long as they are on a steady curve- fat or thin is fine as long as they are eating healthy & developing milestones as they should. :)

My daughter was only 19 pounds when she turned 12 mos old. She stayed there for quite a while. She is now 13 and very healthy. Don't worry about the percentile, in my opinion it is just an average.

my boy was 19 pounds when he was 4-5 months old! so weight goes from one extreme to another. as long as he is growing and not declining in his percentile, even if it is as at a low percentile, he's fine.

My daughter weighed that at her year check up last year. She is now 2 and weighs 23 lbs. I wouldn't worry about it. Your child will grow at his/her own pace. I think that the doctors aren't used to seeing children at a healthy weight so they don't know what to do when they do. If your child has always been thin then no big deal. Now if he/she has always been above average and then all the sudden is below average that could signify something. I wouldn't worry though. If it was something serious they would have ordered a bunch of tests. Just keep feeding your child like you always do and enjoy life. They will tell you when and if it is time to worry. Always remember not to waste to much time on worrying or you will miss out on your life with your child.

well my daughter will be 2 in 3 weeks and weighs 20 lbs. Some kids are just built smaller. As long as he is hitting milestones and does not having any health problems then I would't worry to much about it.

Peds can only go by charts for "average kids" in the country , they don't take into account your childs build and the build of close family members. My kids are very slim build , my middle daughter didn't weigh 20lbs until she was 18 months. Your childs weight sounds fine to me. All you need to take into consideration is that he/she is gaining weight and eating a good balanced diet.

I'd be seeking the pediatrician's recommendation regarding whether or not it's a concern. I've always had the opposite problem with chunky babies and have been very proactive with the pediatrician making sure it doesn't become an issue.

You can check the pediatric growth charts for yourself. 19 lbs is on the smal side, especially for a baby boy, but if he's consistently gaining weight, height and is on track with developmental milestones, it may not be more than a matter of monitoring.

Well i guess every baby is different but it does sound a little low for a 12-14 month old. My son is 7 months and he is 19 1/2 lbs and my other kids were all around the same. I'm sure it also depends on the birth weight if he is a premie or just weight less then most. My kids were 8.2, 8.12 & 8.15 all big babies to begin with. As long as he is healthy and thriving he should be fine every baby grows at different speeds. Good luck!

As long as your toddler is following his own growth curve, he's eating, thriving, and doing well, then don't worry. My neighbor has twin 3yr olds who just hit 25lbs. They are tiny, but healthy!

just remember he needs to remain rear facing in his car seat! Google Extended rear facing, although at not even 20lbs he's not 'extended' yet, but still needs to be. :)

My ped does not worry so much about how much they weigh. He goes by where they are on their individual growth chart. If one month they are in the 50th percentile and the next they are down to the 40th percentile he would be concerned. My oldest daughter has always been in the 5th percentile for weight and now is 10th percentile for height. I have never freaked out because she has always been consistant with HER growth chart.

I think this question is best answered by your pediatrician. Is s/he concerned? If not, then I wouldn't worry. There are always going to be kids who fall into those percentiles at the low and high end of the charts, that's the nature of percentiles. As others have posted, as long as he's growing and gaining weight on a consistent basis, then you shouldn't worry.

This is another reference for growth charts:
http://www.kellymom.com/babyconcerns/growth/growthcharts....
It addresses the difference between breast and bottle fed babies, as another poster mentioned.

I wouldn't worry too much. My daughter is 5 years old and just got up to 37 pounds. She is a bit tiny but very healthy. My pediatrician recommended Pediasure drinks to help her gain some weight, she loved them but they became a bit too expensive for us. I don't worry too much because she really does eat quite a bit of healthy (I limit her junk food) foods. I think as long as he seems healthy and happy to you he will be just fine.

My daughter is 18 mo and weighs 23 lbs. The Dr was not worried about her weight at all. She eats good and gets plenty of vitamins and is very healthy. I wouldn't worry about their weight unless it is a health problem.

My son was 31 lbs at 12 mos, but he was in the 80-90%...being in the 10% is not a bad thing, it just means you have a little guy. I have a friend whose son was 21 lbs at a year (which is what my son was at 6 mos!). Every child is different.

Don't be too concerned with the percentile charts. Sometimes it is just more scary to hear where your child is on the chart than it really is. I wouldn't worry about it. So long as your child is growing steadily he will be fine.
My oldest was 18lbs at 1year, 21lbs at 2 years, and is now 27lbs at 3years. My youngest was 19lbs at 1 year and almost 21lbs at 2 years. Both are very active, have reached each milestone like any other child, sleep well, and somedays they eat well and somedays they don't.
