My 15 month old has had a low grade temp. of anywhere between 100-101 since tue. (today is Fri.) I took her to the Dr. for dry peeling feet on Tue. and the nurse said she had a temp of 100.5 so when the doc came in he looked in her ears and said she was a little congested but didn't seem that concerned about the temp. (they never are) So when I got home I gave her some infant Advil and checked agian the next morning. SHe was fine in the morning but later in the afternoon she felt warm again and yep sure enough it was back with a 100.1 temp. The following day it was 101 and now again today she felt warm and sure enough it was 100.4. It is not all day long that she has it but it does come back at some point during every day. I give her belledona and at night I giver her infant advil. She has been a little cranky and clingy but nothing that throws any red flags. Both of my kids had colds about two weeks ago for like a day and then was fine...niether of them having a fever. My older child has not had a fever but has had a runny nose on and off and now today a little congested and tired. SO now that it is a holiday weekend is this something I should be concerned about enough to call the afterhours number? I don't feel like it is an emergancy but I am not sure if I feel comfortable waiting until Tue. to take her back to the Dr. How many days of a low grade fever do you let your kids go before calling the doc? (I always thought three) I do know that she is teething but she has had inflamed gums for months now and has not had a fever over 99.0 (took her to the dentist and was not concered about her inflamed gums and very slow going teeth) So am I over reacting if I call the afterhours doc.?

What can I do next?

In the past my kids have had viruses that are mainly a fever and they do last for several days. If it gets worse then maybe take her but I think you can wait until next week and it will probably resolve before that.

I would not go to the doctor - it's very low grade and it is not consistent. As long as it goes away with the advil, I would wait and see if it gets any worse. I don't know what kind of insurance you have, but I can access an urgent care center 365 days a year between 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Check on your insurance coverage and see if there is an urgent care clinic close by that you can go to if it gets worse. If so, then you have your peace of mind.

I really think she's probably okay. Sounds like some sort of bug. Her fever really isn't that high. I'd wait it out and if she's still got a fever and cranky next week then take her back.

I do think you're overreacting. The fever is not alarmingly high, and it's only been for a few days. She is probably fighting off an illness, or it could be teething related.

My daughters fever ranged from 102.5-104.8 for 1 week. She had no other symptoms besides a little groggy. She even begged me to teach her how to ride a 2 wheeler during this high fever.

I took her to the Dr on the 2nd day of high temp, they couldn't find anything wrong. I took her back on the 4th day, still couldn't find anything and said that kids can run high fevers for up to a week straight. I took her to the ER on the 6th day (which was her 5th birthday) because I just couldn't take it anymore even though she still had no signs of anything wrong. The ER Dr told me the same thing about a high fever with no symptoms can go as long as 1 week. The fever finally broke on the 7th day.

My goodness was this awful on me. I had hardly any sleep that entire week cause I kept waking up to check on her or give her medicine. My husband was out of town for 3 weeks and my older daughter was graduating University college on the same day as my daughter turning 5. I seriously have no idea how I managed.

I really don't think there is a need to call unless she is not doing well at all; lethargic, not eating, very fussy, diarrhea, new symptoms etc.

Hi M.,

Its whatever you feel---If you need peace of mind, go this weekend. If it were me, I would want to be sure. So I would go---at least call and talk to advice nurse, but I would go in just in case. It sounds like she is getting the fever back after advil wears off----I would be concerned about a bacterial infection or something to cause low grade fever. Good luck~

You call the after hours number, ANYTIME you feel you need to.
That is what it is for.
Don't feel awkward about it.
The youngest is only 15 months old.
But keep monitoring the fever.
Advil etc., only reduces discomfort and lowers the fever. But it does not "cure" the illness. Fever will return if the person is still sick.

Colds, typically last 7-10 days.
Congestion, originates from the: nose/sinuses and/or the chest.
Congestion is due to mucus and/or constricted airways, in other words, it is inflamed or irritated. Hence, congestion.
Being sick causes fatigue.

IF the fever rises and gets higher, apply cool cloths to forehead and the armpits and under the knees. This is what my Nurse friend says. Or, a tepid bath. NOT cold bath. That will shock the body.

To prevent dehydration, which fever can cause, offer water in small amounts intermittently. Or cool pops, or Pedialyte etc.
Orange juice when sick, creates more mucus.

Just monitor the fever, day and night.
Sometimes fevers will spike at night.
Times like that I do not sleep and monitor my kids all night too.

Per Doc's, they typically will be concerned if Fever is over 101 degrees.

My son was once sick a couple of months ago with a cold. It was a bad cold virus that was going around. He had fevers, everyday. For about 5 days. I had taken him to the Pediatrician twice... in the beginning and a few days later since the fever was everyday. But his fever, would spike much higher.

Then the other thing is: a young child like that cannot typically say... what hurts or what is bothering them. ie: when having a cold and Fever... there may also be accompanying headache/chills/sore throat etc. But your child does not appear to be fussy or in pain.
But keep observing her.
If at anytime, symptoms increase or new symptoms arise... or gets worse, THEN you call the Doctor, anytime, on the after hours number.

This is actually a low temperature and I suggest that if you call the doctor they will tell you it'd nothing to be concerned about. I suggest that you do call so that you can be reassured.

Most fevers are caused by a virus; therefore there is nothing that the doctor can do. If the fever is combined with a sore throat, ear aches then it's time to see the doctor because those are symptoms of strep throat and ear infections. Otherwise you just wait it out, give plenty of fluids and encourage rest.

I call the 24/7 nurse line WHENEVER I've got Q's or need to touch base.

I don't sweat a fever under 103, though (unless he's post op), unless its been going on for a couple weeks (or is only kept under 103 but double tapping with both Tylenol & Ibuprofen)... And then I wouldn't call after hours. For ME after hours is "Do I need to take him to the ER, or can I treat at home?"

The 3 day fever rule (lowgrade) is:

- At that point probably an infection (UNLESS you're teething)
- To touch base with doctor about meds if you're dosing around the clock).
