My one year old son is just determined to drink his milk from his bottle. Currently he drinks water from his cup. he has been drinking from a cup since he was five months old.The problem is, once I put milk in the cup he refuses to drink it. I asked the doctor for any advice and he didn't really have one.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the great advice, it's greatly appreciated. My husband and I went out and bought that Nuby cup. He loves it and drinks milk from it, what a concept.

I'll tell you what worked wonders for my son.. Walmart Nuby cups. They are still "bottle-like" (very soft spout), but he can hold the handles and drink completely by himself. I still have to hold him though so he tips it back enough. It only took me one day to get him off the actual bottle. I haven't really tried getting him to drink it out of other sippy cups though, but he's only 10 months old so I'm not going to rush it... Also, have you thought about maybe warming up the milk?

Hey K.!

I had a similar problem! My daughter was not even holding her own bottle (although she could), but able to drink out of a cup just fine and had been since 6 months, so I decided to give up the bottle...first I took away all the daytime ones, and just kept the morning and night formula in a bottle, then I decided to stop all bottles and when I did, my daughter (I think she was 8 months)kind of stopped drinking formula for about 3-4 days...she was getting an ok amount in, but kind of protesting in her own way! But once she saw that I was not going to switch back, she seemed to 'accept' it and we have been bottle free for almost 3 months now! Good luck!!

My sister and I both used those Nuby cups and they worked great. The top still feels like a nipple somewhat of a bottle but they are using a cup. Eventually you can then move to a sippy cup with the hard top
Good luck

We are also trying to wean from the bottle to the cup. One thing that I have found to be helpful is the Nuby Sippy Cups with the silicon spouts. My daughter seemed to not mind these ones becuase they were most like a bottle. Once she got used to these we plan on trying other sippy cups. Good luck!

P.S. Our doctor didn't know what to tell us either.

If he's able to drink the water from the cup, then you should feel confident that he will, rather quickly, get used to his milk from it too. Mastering the skill is one step of the process and if he has that down it's a great start. My daughter was the same way, except she didn't get a bottle, she nursed, but still refused cups with milk in them. I, somewhat accidentally, got her to get used to the milk through a straw (figured this out at a restaurant) I just used my finger over one end to give her a sip at a time, then she learned to suck it up through the straw, once she got used to the milk coming from a different place, she barely even noticed when I put it in her cup. I know the situation is a little different for you, but it's an idea - it worked for me!

My daughter was the same way she is 14 months what she would take is a sippe with a straw you can try that it worked for me. My other Daughter is now 6 and with her I just took all the bottles and got rid of them I would only give her a sippe cup I know it sounds mean but it worked....

My daughter was the same way!
The only thing that worked for me, is to wean her from the bottle, period. I was very nervous about it, but it only took one day of extra attention and patience on my part. For instance, when she fussed for a bottle, instead of giving her one, I'd give her some yogurt and play with a new toy or read her favorite book. At naptimes she cried a little more than usual, about 10 minutes, but fell asleep just fine. Anyway, I kept the bedtime bottle until she was about 13 months old, and then gradually, over two weeks, gave her fewer and fewer ounces of formula in her bottle until she didn't even miss it. Sounds too good to be true, I know, but my Abby is a DIVA and LOVED her bottle. So my advice is to get down to one bottle at night, and don't even try to put milk in a cup until she's done with the bottle b/c she'll just get pissed! good luck!
BY THE WAY, I TRIED THE NUBY CUPS TOO...DIDN'T WORK FOR ABIGAIL!

My advice is to take away his bottle. It will be a couple of days of crying but it is easier than you think it will be. I think it is harder on the parents. If he doesn't drink his milk don't worry about it. Just make sure he gets his calcium in other ways. One cup of orange juice with calcium has the same amount as milk. Also cheese is a good source. My three year old has never liked milk and everyone used to tell how bad that was but as long as he is getting it other ways it doesn't matter. Good luck. Hope this helps.

this is my advice and i'm sure you have plenty more to look into. slowly ween him do 1/4 cup of milk and 3/4 cup of water. do this for a day then up to 1/2 and 1/2. this is what worked for me and another trow all the bottles away and let him watch you.

Question. Do you also give your son a bottle, especially at night? My son is 18 months old, and I introduced him to a sippy cup when he was about 6 months old (this is when I stopped nursing him). I didn't want to make a drastic change for him, so I would give him a sippy cup during the day and a bottle at night. When he turned 9 months, I put the bottles away and only gave him a sippy cup. It was tough the first week, especially when he saw other children with a bottle but it got better. The key is being consistant. Good luck!

I had a hard time weaning my son from brest to cup...but then I found a cup called NUBY. It has a silicone(sp) spout that he adapted to. You may want to try that because it may remind him of a bottle a little bit.
