Hi moms, I am due in August/08 with my second child, this time a boy. We are so excited. The problem is that my husband is totally fixated on modern names (maddox, vaughn) and I am totally the opposite, like I want a bible name or an old name (Benjamin, Henry James). Please help, we've tried to make up our minds but seems what I like he doesn't like. Our last name is S..
Thanks.

What can I do next?

Why not combine the two genre's? Benjamin Vaughn S.? There is a compromise to be had...One of each, find one that flows...

Hi L., I had to name my son with the family first name Jack which I was not so thrilled about and at the time Beverly Hills 90210 was on the last season. I loved the character NOAH on the show. So we did Jack Noah. Noah was kind 0f modern at the time and a bible name. So make the first name traditional and the middle name modern. We call our son Noah not Jack. James Maddox or Benjamin Vaughn, Henry Vaughn James S. sounds like a strong name for a boy. Good Luck, hope that helps a little, B.

Okay - S. sounds like a pets name --- a boy would get teased with that name!!! Have you thought of making a list of family names - names that have a connection to the past are good - both of my sons bear names from both sides of the family. Some cultures don't name their children until after the first year, they get to know the child's personality first. A name should mean something -- qualities you want your child to have -- I am sure you have a baby name book -- look up the meaning of the names - trust me when you look in your child's eyes - the name will come - just narrow it down to a few and when the time comes - you will be able to agree on a name. Wishing a safe delivery and a lifetime of joy and wonder for you and your husband as you watch your child grow.

Hi L.,
BTW I love the name L.!
I think I am the only person who did extensive research on naming babies. There are statistics out there in regards to them. For instance, I read somewhere that people whose name starts with an R,S,T,U,V,W,X,Y,Z do not live as long as people whose names start with a letter before R. I researched meanings of names and popular names. You can go to the department of vital statistics for the state of Texas and get last year's most popular baby names. Avoid the top 5.

My point is: I did all this research & had a "THE PERFECT" name picked out and when I looked at my baby for the first time, I said, "There is no way I'm naming her Kayla!" (I think that was the name) What ever it was, she didn't look like one. So we ended up naming her a completely different name and couldn't be happier.

WAIT UNTIL AFTER YOUR BEAUTIFUL BABY BOY IS BORN TO NAME HIM and let HIM inspire you.

Sincerely,
L. McKinney

Hi, L.. I have to agree with you a hundred percent on this. I like the old names as you do. I would never agree with Maddox or Vaughn, and they do not sound good with your last name at all. I like James Henry S.. It has a nice ring to it. You should have your say on the child's first and middle name, and tell hubby he's going to be carrying his last name forever and ever, so it's not like he's losing the battle over the name totally. To me this name has a nice ring to it, James Henry S.. Good luck with your new bundle of joy. God bless.

Hubby and I also had a hard time agreeing. Finally we both wrote our top tens down to make a list of 20 names. We then had to rank the 20 names (assign 1-20) to the list. Next we added the rankings together (If I ranked a name 3rd place and my hubby ranked it 10th place its numerical value would be 13). We narrowed the list to the 5 names with the smallest combined values. Each of us then had the power to veto one name of the five from consideration. That left us with a list of 3 names from which to decide. It's not perfect, but it at least makes you think about which of your hubby's suggestions you could live with and vice versa. In the end we had one clear name that we both would be happy with and that is what we named our son (ironically - his name is Henry James)

Congrats on your little boy!
Since your last name is not weird, but unusual for a last name (S. brings to mind a first name or nickname). I tend to agree with you...a more classic name. When I saw Vaughn and Maddox it felt like the name should be reversed...S. Vaughn, S. Maddox..which could cause confusion when he is in school. The more classic names would avoid some of the confusion. Henry James S. is really nice...Just my thoughts. Best wishes!

We named our son Aaron. The definition is "Tower of Strength". It is a noble name, old, yet current. His middle name, Michael means, "He, who is like God". Makes sense when you think of the Archangel Michael. Blessings to your family.
