My 3 1/2 year old has been wearing underwear to bed for a few weeks....more than half the time she will wake up dry...however, I'm tired of washing everything! Any suggestions on how to wash a minimal amount, would be greatly appreciated!

Maybe you could safety pin a changing pad (my friend bought puppy pads, they're cheaper but the same thing she says) to the bed sheet. Just lay an extra sheet over the pad as extra protection against the pins.

Double the sheets...like put one of those protectors down then a sheet, then a protector and then a sheet...that way if she has an accident you take off the first layer of sheet and protector and you have a fresh one underneath.

Buy some night time training underwear. My son used to wake up nightly with wet training underwear and only a few times has he leaked through the underwear. The best thing about training underwear, it helps minimize any mess and it helps them train in my opinion faster than a pull up. My son is almost 4 and he has been night trained for awhile now.

We also have every bed in our house protected with a mattress protector.

Good Luck to you.

3 1/2 is pretty young to expect to be dry all night. It's the very beginning of being physically ready to not go all night. Her body is still probably not ready to stay dry all night, and little ones rarely wake up to potty. Have you considered putting her in trainers? NOT pull ups, because pull ups are diapers. But cloth trainers that she can pull up and down easily to go to the bathroom, but will absorb urine if she does wet and she will feel it (unlike a pull up that absorbs and keeps them feeling drier like a diaper).

It's added security. My 4.5 year old does not mind. His confidence isn't affected at all by wearing them. They are more like undies than a diaper, they're just more absorbent.

The upside is that when she doesn't need them anymore, you save them for the 2 year old when he/she needs them. You'll never buy pull ups again!

My son never had any physical problems with overnights. I used them until I got tired of buying them! He is 8 years old and still has accidents every now and then. I bought a waterproof lining for his bed. I will still have to wash sheets, but the mattress is protected. Best wishes.

Put a waterproof mattress pad over the bottom sheet. If he wets, then you will only have to wash the mattress pad. Get two, they take a long time to dry. Also put your son on the potty before he goes to bed even if he says he doesn't have to go. Be positive and say something like, "Sometimes it surprises you. Just try anyway to make sure." My son went through this and we stuck with the underwear. Neither of us wanted to go back to diapers. Good luck.

I just finished potty training my 3 & 4 year olds, so I feel very qualified here at this moment. My daughter would soak the bed regardless of when I cut off the liquids & we always have them go right before bed. I too got tired of all the washing. I began to use those night time pull ups. She developed boils on her bottom and they were getting infected with staph. VERY HORRIBLE! The Dr. recommended getting rid of the pull ups. Keeping her dry. So, kids got ot bed at 8:00-8:30. I then would have her go at about 10:30 when I went to bed and then I would set watch for 2:30am and have her go again. Since I was up, I had son go too. No more accidents or having to wash all the laundry daily. Both my kids would go right back to bed. So, I was up for like 10 mintues max. She then began telling me that I didn't have to wake her & that she'd doit herself. So I took away the 10:30 trip and just woke them both at 1:30am for about a month or so. Still no accidents. Then she begged and begged for me not to wake her and I agreed that I'd let her handle it. Son also was cool with it and poof. I haven't had any problems since. My daughter is 4 and my son is 3 and I know it has been about 6 months since any accidents. Hope this helps you. Best of luck.

Get a fitted waterproof matress pad, the kind that has the plastic liner on the inside, the padding on top. Place that on the matress, then layer a sheet, a flat crib matress protector, and then another sheet. This way when she wets the bed, just strip off the top sheet and the crib protecter, change and wipe her down, and everyone is back in bed in 15 minutes!

Also, a good habit to start is to not allow any liquids after dinner, or 1-2 hours before bedtime. We have a bedtime routine of bath, brush teeth, potty, wash hands, SMALL sip of water, story, then bed. I can count on one hand the times my son has wet the bed, and they were all due to outside stimuli. Good luck!

Why not get one of the baby mattress size waterproof pads and put under her at night?

My 3 1/2 yo also wears undies to bed. She was doing well (no accidents) for several months but recently started bed wetting more often than not. I agree that washing all the bedding is a drag, but honestly it's much less expensive than reverting back to pull ups. And she doesn't want the pull-ups... It's important for her self confidence that she not wear pull-ups.

I'm not sure there is much you can do to control which parts off the bedding gets wet... It all depends on how the child sleeps that night. Sometimes she sleeps on top of her pillow or on her heavy blanket... Sometimes she has pushed the blankets off and only the under layer sheets are wet. I have three sets of bedding. It only takes 10 minutes to change everything.

Good luck!

There are pads several feet square that you can put on top of the sheet under her. These are in drug stores near the adult diaper products. They'll protect the sheets, but not pajamas. Good luck. Have you tried GoodNights, which are like pullups for older kids?

S., I have a waterproof mattress pad, of course, but can't stand washing that all of the time. So, I place a infant lap-pad under the spot that my son usually wets on. That way, I usually only have to wash the flat sheet and that little pad. You can get them at Babies R Us. Don't buy the little ones. Hold out for the larger ones (they are harder to find but you can find them).

S., my 3-year-old still has the occasional accident, and I despise changing the whole sheet and mattress cover.

At Bed Bath & Beyond, I found some waterproof pads, that are about 2' x 3' (I think they're bigger than the "lap pads" people suggested). I lay them side-by-side and slightly overlapping (so together they're about the size of a crib sheet) and wrap them in an extra flat sheet. When I flip it over, I tuck one side of the sheet between the mattress and wall, then the other end under the mattress. This helps to keep the pads in place, and prevents having to strip the bed to get at any pads under the fitted sheet.

i also have a 3 1/2 year old who is in undies. Get a plastic matress cover then put the sheets on and get a soaker pad. They use them in hospitals and nursing homes. Its like cloth with a plastic bottom so it doesnt soak through to the whole bed. I too was sick of washing sheets ALL THE TIME. Once we started with the soaker pad, all we wash is the pad :)

Hi S.,

I TOTALLY understand how you are feeling. The best product I found for my 4 1/2 year old's bed is the "Dri Nights Waterproof Mattress Protector" from Leaps and Bounds. I purchased two - when one gets wet in the night, I just pull if off and put the other one on. Very easy to clean - just throw it in the washing machine and dryer. This product has greatly saved my sanity - especially in the wee hours of the morning. High quality and durable. It doesn't move at all especially since my daughter changes positions so many times during the night. When we travel, I bring one along to put on the bed my daughter sleeps on. This product is worth EVERY PENNY!

Here is the description from the www.leapsandbounds.com website:

"Potty training? Bed wetting? Our saddle-style mattress protector makes clean-up easier and its more absorbant than others! No more changing the sheets at 2:00 a.m.! Simply place over the fitted sheet and tuck in the extra-long side flaps. It stays put, yet lifts off quickly when needed (buy 2, so you'll have a replacement handy). Triple layered, with a soft, quilted top, absorbent core, and waterproof bottom. Choose Crib/Twin (34" x 36" pad) or Full (36" x 54" pad). Machine wash. Imported. Exclusively Ours!"

Hope this helps!
K.
