It is going to be a month since I started to look for a job and I am getting frustated. I have been applying for 5 to 10 jobs every other day on the internet, I have being to 4 interviews but nothing. I am looking for a position as an Administrative Assistant/Secretary. Can someone give me any advice on what should I do. (besides keep waiting and applying for more jobs)

What can I do next?

another way to approach this is to think of WHERE you want to work & then contact them to see if they have any positions available- actually walking in would help with this too...

is there an office building you've always wondered about? go there & see what offices are there...

is there a 'kind' of doctor's office you're interested in?

is there a particular company or kind of company you are interested in?

do you want to work for the government? city? state? county?

just some ideas...

I've always had more success this way then answering an ad...

During an interview, you have to really listen to what they are saying and what they are asking to really know what they are looking for in an employee. You should not be dishonest with your answers, but you should word your answers carefully. Generally, an employer wants to know that you are committed to making the job a priority in your life (so don't talk TOO much about your baby), that you are reliable, and that you are qualified for the job. If you lack experience, pump up your other qualities, like that you get along well with others, have a positive attitude, you are a fast learner, etc. ALWAYS end the interview finding out the next step, like ask when they will be making their decision or when you can expect to hear from them. If it will be a few days, follow up with a thank-you-for-giving-me-the-opportunity-to-meet-with-you/looking-forward-to-hearing-from-you letter. Since you are young, you need to do everything you can to come across a being professional. And be prepared with a good answer to the "what are your weaknesses/areas that need improvement" question. The trick to that one is to put a positive spin on it-- like say you like to get involved so you end up volunteering to be on a lot of committees. If you can, try to remember what some of the questions were and how you answered them and maybe we can help you tweak your responses for next time.Good luck- let us know how it goes!

Hi C.,

I understand your frusteration. Are you looking at careerbuilder.com? There are also a lot of agencies in town that recruit for businesses. Appleone, spherion, kelly services, just to name a few. Try looking up "headhunters" or "recruiters" Orlando in a search engine and see what you come up with.

Good luck

Sign up with a Temp Employment Agency like Kelly Girls, Adecco or Apple One. It can be a great way to get your foot in the door. Many companies like to hire temporary workers that may move to permanent. Good Luck!

C., as a former manager, i can tell you the first thing i judge a possible candidate by is the way they dress for the interview, or even to come fill out an application. That says alot about someone. You should also have a resume. Especially if you are looking in the field you say you are. Employers get tons of calls every day regarding a position, so you need to be prepared to stand out. Be flexible with the hours you are looking for. They may hire you part time, but like you enough in the future to make you full time. DOn't ever put down an expected salary. That is always a negotiable based on experience. If i see that someone writes on an application that they expect to make $15/hr, and we are only paying $10, i won't even bother to call the person back. But if there is nothing put in that box, it is open for discussion. Remember, dress to impress, and bring your resume so if the employer doesn't have time to speak with you, they will have it for reference. Good luck!!

My law firm is looking for a receptionist if you are interested. Your duties would entail more than just answering the phones, so you would be learning as well. The firm's name is Johnson, Anselmo, et al. We are located in downtown Fort Lauderdale on Sunrise Blvd. The hours are 8:30-5:15. If you would like you can fax your resume to Lynn Jones at ###-###-####. Otherwise, just keep trying.
