Hi Moms-

I am a Girl Scout leader for the first grade Brownie troop. I am working on a Try-It badge that focuses on being a good citizen. Believe it or not...the girls really enjoyed cleaning up the litter of the school and park grounds. They really feel good about volunteering in general. So here's my request......

I am looking for places (that you already know of) that would be beneficial to the girls as well as helpful to the organization. I know I can call places and explain my request... but it would save me a lot of time if you could direct me in the right place. Like.... I know I could try and call a nursing home, animal shelter, etc... but I would like to have recommendations from moms, teachers, girl scout leaders, etc... that already know what organizations to call for this age group... (6 and 7 yr. olds)to do volunteer work for them.

Thank you so much for any suggestions that you might have.

J.

I've taken my boys (good for girls too) to "Feed My Starving Children" in Aurora to pack food packets for children in foreign countries in need.

It's the most wonderful experience, because they see a film at the beginning of the children in need - the food packing involves all kids/adults - and at the end they show the impact of the work - it's really touching.

What about going to Friendship Village? My kids went to assisted living places and played bingo with the residents.

Just call the activities director and ask what you can do.

Another option (I don't know how this translates into a badge) would be to "adopt" a resident at one of those places and your troop could make cards, cookies, visit, etc.

I think the Illinois Prairie Path cleanup is coming up soon. That would be another activity.

My daughter's troop did a new/gently used book and toy drive over the holidays. They donated the items to families at a clinic in Chicago. I know that the Infant Welfare Society in our town collects new books to distribute to each child who comes in for a visit. I don't know if there is something similar in your town, but I know they are always looking to restock their book supplies.
