Volunteer Opportunities for Young Children

My father passed away very unexpectedly the day after Christmas last year. He was always involved in charitable organizations so I thought a nice way to honor his memory to be to volunteer. I'm looking for something around the holidays in which would be appropriate for young children (9, 7, 6 yo). I would like to do something that my whole family could participate in as a way of celebrating what gifts we have instead of wallowing in our sorrows for the loss of our father/grandfather/hsb. Does anyone have any good suggestions? We live in Macomb Township but would be happy to volunteer elsewhere. Thanks!

What can I do next?

We volunteered in Pontiac for a few years helping to bag food for the less fortunate for Thanksgiving. We did it through our church, I am sure I can find the info if this interests you. Or another thing we did that my kids loved was adopt a soldier through www.soldiersangels.com. We had a soldier who sent us many letters and pictures. The kids enjoyed writing the letters and making extras for the packages we sent.

Call your local Lion's Club, food pantries or churches that feed the homeless. They could all use volunteers over the holidays.

God bless you for giving your time.

My church, which is Immanuel Lutheran (21/Romeo Plank Rd.), does have a food pantry, and they do a program called "Gifts for all God's Children". They have names of children who are less fortunate, and need gifts for Christmas. You basically pick a name or names, and provides gifts. You can pick one or more children, or you could pick siblings from the same family. I like to pick a child that is the same age as mine. This way, i know what sizes/toys/activities are appropriate. I know others do the same. My daughter is only 2, but your children are old enough that they would probably enjoy helping to shop for the gifts, especially if you chose a 5 and 9 year old. The names are usually available around November 1st, and the gifts usually have to be in by Thanksgiving, but if you're interested, you could call Nancy at ###-###-####. She is also in charge of the food pantry. they try to provide thanksgiving dinners to families. Nancy may also have other ideas for you as well, as she is in charge of outreach at the church.
