my son has been having chronic colds since hes 1yr old. he is now on zyrtec and nose spray for allergies. he was at drs last week and said there was some fluid in his ear so he suggested tubes and adnoids removed. he was in again today for a check up and said there was no fluid and no cold signs. SO his surgery is next wed. do i do it or not?? i hate the idea of putting my son to sleep and getting this done if its not needed however i know as soon as i cancel the surgery it might come back again.
these apts are with ear nose and throat drs and his family dr. any one have this done to their child with good results?

What can I do next?

I'm doing the same thing with my 5 year old son on June 1st... He has fluid in his ears and has had a cough for 5 months (on and off)... He's getting his tonsils taken out as well... The only thing I've heard is that they are uncomfortable from days 5-7... I think you should do it~

our dd had her's donr at 2 including tonsiles what a difference. she did have two nasty ear infections after having the tubes put in and now nothing its been great. also talk to him about havig his tonsiles removed also its the same recovery time and will make it less likly for any type of infection to get caught up in the throat. When I was younger my mom only had my adnoids done and still kept getting sick she refused for whatever reason to have my tonsiles removed at the time, fast forward 30 some odd years later I HAD to have them removed and the worst pain in my life!! Its been over 3 weeks and I still have swelling and problems swallowing. gl

I would do it if you're having recurring issues. It's a very quick recovery...the worst is them coming out of the anesthesia. My son had both done just after his first birthday. He had horrible trouble with ear infections and snored literally like an old man. The poor kid couldn't sleep. He'll be so much better off. It's a routine surgery and is super fast.

if it was only one time that he saw fluid, then I would question it.

both my kids had tubes in and adnoid removal at 18 months. It was a life saver!! No more colds, runny noses (which were constant), snoring, etc. It is hard to make that decision and I also questioned it. It is worse to put you kid through constantly feeling yucky. Adnoids are nothing but bacteria catchers. Once removed, you and he will be so much happier. Tough decision for a mom, but it worked wonders and I am so glad they are gone! (tubes helped too:) GOOD LUCK!

My now 5 year old always had ear infections, and was constantly wick, she actually had her 3rd set of tubes put in a couple weeks ago! However, when she was 3, due to the size of her tonsils and contsantly being sick, she had her tonsils, and adenoids removed as well as tubes put in. It's a HUGE difference. She barely gets sick now and sleeps so much better! If you have any doubts, just get a second opinion, it will make you feel better. The ENT here did a sleep study just to make sure and that made me feel so much better. Finding out that she had sleep apnea was all I needed to hear!

My son had tubes put in when he was 14 months old... but this was after several months of CHRONIC and repeated ear infections, even while on antibiotics!

I did not regret it at all...

However, if he hasn't had a history of fluid in his ears, and repeated ear infections, I would wonder if it was necessary..... my grandson went to an ENT for a hearing evaluation, and they saw fluid, and recommended tubes.... we decided to wait.... a week later, he ended up with an ear infection. I really think that doctor looked at her being a "CHIP M." and figured it would be easy money, and that she wouldn't question the need. (Her son was on CHIP insurance at that point....)

No other doctor had ever mentioned fluid being in the Eustachian tubes....

I have never heard of one observation of fluid in the ears cause a recommendation for surgery. Typically, the tube recommendation comes after repeated, recurring ear infections (caused by fluid not draining properly). Also, I normally hear of tonsils and adnoids being done together due to repeated tonsilitis (or sometimes repeated strep eventhough you can still get strep without having tonsils).

Info you have given does not give me enough info to know for sure if I would or wouldn't go through with it. If what you have stated is it (no recurring or hard to clear up ear infections) then I would not have the tubes done. I would also not have adnoids removed without knowing why. If you don't have additional info, you should ask so you can make a decision.

Try chiropractic first! Worked for my kid and about ten others I know I personally.
