Trouble with Organic Juice

Recently my mother in law picked up some juice for my soon-to-be 1 year old at a local grocery store. It was riduculously cheap at 75 cents for a 4-pack of Gerber Organic. The expiration date is Sept. of 09, so she bought it. My daughter has been drinking juice and eating table foods for some time now and as had no issues with anything she's consumed. Within an hour of drinking one of the pear juices, she gets explosive diarhea every time. It took us a few days to figure out that it was the juice that was causing it. I've thrown the juice in the trash, of course. I just wondered if anyone else has had this happen with their child. I always buy 100% juices and usually give Lily (my daughter) the same juices that her father and I drink. In the past I've given her Gerber's juices, including pear juice, only it wasn't organic. I still give her Gerber's Garden Blend regularly. I wonder if she's having this reaction because it's organic juice.

What can I do next?

I have heard that organic juice has to be diluted or it will cause diarrhea. I have always diluted it with my kids- 50% juice and 50% water and we've never had a problem with it. I was told to think of it like you're giving them 2-3 whole pears (or apples or whatever fruit). If your child ate that many pears, she would most likely get diarrhea- it's the same with drinking the juice. If you look at the ingredients of a lot of the 100% juices, it is 100% juice- not from concentrate- but it still has a lot of water in it. Anyways... hope this helps!

S.,

We had bought some organic juice like capri sun for my kids and it did the same exact thing. I'm not sure what it is about the organic juice. I guess it's good if your having trouble going to the bathroom. We had to stop buying it too.

I have never tried organic juices on my daughter but everytime she drinks apple juice she will get diahrrea. I wouldn't think it was just because its organic but I suppose its possible.

At the age that your daughter is, you really should be diluting her juice anyway. Whether it is organic or not. The thing with organic is that it is healthier and when you switch from processed to organic your body will react. There was nothing wrong with the organic, just her body wasn't used to all the good stuff. Normal. A friend of mine's son is the same way only with non-organic stuff. He is used to the organic stuff and not the processed. Even his meat is organic. So if you are willing to try the organic juice again, just dilute it. But remember you really should be diluting all her juices until she is around 2 and a half. Good luck and God Bless.
