If I'm understanding your question correctly, the cases I've heard of have had their tongue 'snipped' and all issues (feeding/speech) have ended right after that. Good luck!

They didn't clip it when he was an infant?! I don't understand that. It's my understanding that that can have huge effects on speech and dietary intake. I noticed my son was tongue tied about an hour after I delivered him and had it clipped right away. His was bad... he had cupids tongue (didn't stop him from nursing, but it could have). I would take to your pediatrician or a speech therapist and see what they would recommend.

The biggest reason we had my youngests snipped this summer was because at 3 he gagged on so many things. What we thought was a texture issue was actually do to his tongue. He could not eat a sandwhich because bread would get stuck on the roof of his mouth now he can his tie was pretty bad he could not stick out his tongue or lift it up he still has difficulty with a few letters/sounds but that is partly his age.

I have a son who was born tounge tied. The nurse noticed it when he was a couple of hours old. She recommended that I get it clipped, but my ped advised me to wait and told me that with time, the problem resolves it self because it would gradually stretch out. She also let me know that he would be monitored closely for signs of improvement. I was to inform her about eating issues and speech issues. Also his weight would be closely monitored, to make sure that he is thriving. If at anytime, things got out of hand ( not gaining weight, not eating, not talking) that they would refer me to a surgeon to get it cut, and or make appt with speech therapist, but in her opinion, she felt that the best solution was to wait it out and see. At the time I was really beside myself because I knew that he could have problems eating and possibly have speech issues. In the end I decided to wait it out, and the pediatrician was right. He did have breastfeeding issues, but I helped him out with breastmilk in a bottle, and he did very well. He's not tounge tied anymore and is a great eater, plus he can talk your head off. :) he will be two soon. Hope this helps.

I am in the midst of this very issue.

At birth, the first pediatrician that examined my now 6 year old told us, in an alarming way, that she had a very high palatte which could lead to feeding problems. It did not. Fast forward to this past fall. She has had some speech issues that we just began to address. We had hoped she would outgrow these immature speech patterns but it was becoming evident that she was not. Speech therapy was started. We went to a routine dental appt and learned that she had a borderline lingual frenulum attachment (tongue tied). No heart shaped tongue was noted when when she would stick out her tongue. After several consultations with oral surgeons, we decided to proceed with a frenulectomy via laser. This was done on 12-27-10. Last week was our first appt with the speech therapist post procedure. She was thrilled with the results. This may or may not speed up her speech progress but it certainly will not hinder any progress. When asked about her tongue and its improved range of motion, she says it is better.

Incidentally, my daughter has always been a fast eater. She would cough a lot when eating hard foods like raw carrots and apples even as an older child. Now, in hind sight, I think part of the problem was related to her tongue tied/tongue thrust issue.

If you decide to get it clipped, I would find a dentist or oral surgeon that does the procedure via laser. The older procedure (clipping) could involve anethesia and sutures with a longer, more painful recovery.

Please feel free to let me know if you have more questions. Below is a question I posted not long about my dtr.

Well, I have so many stories. My daughter is tongue tied. the doctors advised me not to clip it. Well, I kinda regret that now. She is 12 and (not now mind you, God forbid) when she starts to kiss I think she will have problems. She does not want to get it clipped. I still have my reservations. My husband was tongue tied and I say was, because he cut his own when he started to learn how to kiss. He told me this when we started dating and didnt want me to tell anyone. But I just am conserned about my own children. My other daughter has the thick skin on her upper lip and goes through her two front teeth. Braces. arg. I hope this helps. Also, my brother in law is a doctor, but not a pediatrician. soooooo i didnt listen to him but he kept telling me to clip it. I hope this helps. good luck. Oh with my daughter, it never effected her speech or eating thats why they didnt do anything about it.

My oldest had that but the only problem we really had was w/her latching onto a nipple from her bottle. The best ones we found were the Playtex Nurser Orthodontic nipples - I think NUK still has the orthodontic ones as well. My sister-in-law had that and my MIL couldn't understand why they didn't just clip my daughter's but apparently it depends on the day of week sometimes as to how they handle things these days. Good luck!
