Hi Ladies, My 16 mo vomited twice during night last night, and has vomited twice this morning. So far she's not keeping liquids down. She has never been tummy sick like this before, and so I'm not sure I know what to do. In between throwing up she is acting pretty normal, maybe a bit more subdued than usual. Is this type of thing a call to the dr,, a visit to the dr, a wait and see...? Anything I should be doing, other than trying to get her to drink liquids? Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

Call the Doctor, especially if she is not able to keep liquids down. Is she drinking then vomiting?

When my son was little, and vomiting a lot, we had to use suppositories to calm the vomiting and enable him to keep liquids down.

Hope she feels better soon.

UGH, the worst. My 14 month old just had his first stomach flu. He was throwing up for about 24 hours. A lot in the beginning and then it tapered. Our doctor said not to introduce fluids until he had gone a full hour without vomiting. And then to introduce them slowly (water, Pedialyte). It is good to call your doctor though and get the full stomach flu briefing. What the dehydration warning signs are, etc. With my son, we just stripped him down to a diaper, laid some blankets on the floor and had him throw up into some towels (kept a trash bag nearby) and repeated this until he slowed down enough to sleep. We kept him on the floor and stayed close until it was over. We were surprised as well how 'ok' he was in between throwing up. He handled it quite well. I am glad your little one is too. Good luck!!!!! The good thing about these viruses are that they are typically shortlived. Oh and wash your hands like crazy. Both my husband and I got it afterwards too :(

Don't overdue it with anything right now. Small sips every fifteen minutes or so. If she drinks from a straw just a small sip. Or an eyedropper works great too!! The more you try to give her the more that will come up. Also, coca cola syrup works great. It is just flat soda and really settles the stomach. If she isn't running a fever, or having diarrhea then she won't dehydrate quickly, so I wouldn't worry. Tiny sips is the key so she can keep it down. Let her tummy rest, she will be fine. If you would feel more comfortable calling the doc then you should call. I hope she feels better soon!!

I don't know what kind of liquids you are trying, but stay away from dairy at this point. I would offer water, 7-up, pedialyte, things like that.

Also, sometimes they will tolerate popsicles at this time rather than standard liquids.... a bit of liquid coming down from a popsicle sometimes stays in the tummy better than actually drinking liquids.

Do you know how to tell if she is getting dehydrated? That is the big concern with tummy bugs....

Call the doctor. My son had a stomach virus about 5 months ago and I was told to wait 1 hour after vomiting, then 1 teaspoon every 10 minutes for an hour, then bump up to 2 tsp, etc. I think for about 8 hours? He was sick in the afternoon and then went to bed. You'll need to know how to do it for daytime. It worked. He couldn't keep anything down till we did the little bit at a time thing.

I don't like to mess with vomiting in small children...I took my daughter to the Dr. when she was 4 when she did this...I found out it was the Swine Flue...I would take her in to be safe! And being calmer than usual sometimes means a fever...maybe you could check her temp.

Give her 1 tsp. of water per hour. Do you have any Pedialite?
Wait a total of 24 hrs since it began & see how it's going by then. If still vomiting after 24 hrs, call the pediatrician.

The first time my oldest got a stomach bug, I probably almost dehydrated her myself trying to prevent her from vomiting any more. I was trying to follow the 1 teaspoon every 15 minutes exactly, and it frustrated her immensely. Two more kids and 6 years later, I go into combat mode the first sign of vomiting. I throw washable blankets over the furniture in the living room, get out a stack of towels and prepare camp out in the living room. Any soiled towels or blankets go directly into the washing machine. I mix up some Pedialyte and make several options for drinks. It is better to let the tummy rest for a while (hour or so) before introducing any liquids and then only in small amounts. My second oldest wouldn't drink at all once when she was 2, so I put out sprite, water and pedialyte in different cups. She carried them around and lined them up and finally started drinking from them. Usually they will taper off with the vomiting within 24 hours. If they have a high fever or are especially listless, but these things usually just have to run their course. Once both my girls had a norovirus, and it lasted for several days and was very contagious. Definitely not sad to see that one go. I hope that she feels better soon. (If you are like me, you will still be on alert for a few days. For about a week after a stomach virus, I rush them to the bathroom every time they so much as cough.)
