Toddler Hair Texture Problem

My daughter will be 3 years old next month. For about a year now, there is a patch of hair on her head (located in the back, center), that has become extremely coarse, dry and frizzy. It is so unusual because the rest of the hair on her head is very soft and straight. I've tried using Moroccan Oil, but that has only helped to get a comb through it. When I shampoo and condition her hair, that section of her hair matches the rest of her hair, but then soon after her hair is dry it just gets coarse and frizzy again. Does anyone have experience with this kind of thing and does anyone have any ideas for me on how to change the texture?

To answer the sleep question - she sometimes sleeps on her side, sometimes on her back. Also, her hair is very rarely in a ponytail. Most of the time, she won't let me mess with it. But I will try the satin pillowcase!

What can I do next?

My boy used to get dred locks. he had springy curls. dirt, sweat, and being a very active sleeper would bring dreds about. try a leave in conditioner. If it proves challenging to apply, just run some regular conditioner over that spot with your hands.

It should help.

Question - how does she sleep and what is her pillow case made of? I bet she sleeps on that spot. Try a satin pillowcase. Or is it where she usually ges a pony tail? If so, try other hairstyles.

ETA: What shampoo or conditioner do you use? Might be time to try one with more moisturizer in it.

I think it's fairly common. My kids had this from sleeping on their backs, and where their heads rubbed their car seats.

I also think you can have patches of hair on your head that have different texture than the rest - I have a patch at the back center of my head that never permed. Back in the 80's when I permed my hair, one spot remained straight. The hairstylists all told me that it was common to have a section around center of head that had different texture to rest of head. Not sure why.

Leave in conditioner works for us.

Good luck :)

I have an area like that and so does my granddaughter who will be 3 in June. Think it's from sleeping a certain way. Also they sit a certain way in car seat. Nothing to worry about.

It's normal for the hair at the crown of the head to be more coarse than other areas. After you shampoo and condition put a leave in conditioner on that section only. Cantu shea butter leave in conditioning repair cream works really well, is cheap and smells good. It doesn't take much. You can get it at Walmart or the beauty supply store. Comb it through just that section, and then twist or braid just that section. Untwist/Unbraid in the morning and it should help with the frizziness. Just use more product until you get the result you're looking for. If you don't mind spending a bit more money you can look at the products on www.blendedbeauty.com. It has a wide range of products for different hair textures. Sign up for their emails and you'll get a discount code. I've used both and I think the Cantu works best on my daughter's hair, but Blended Beauty has a product called curly frizz pudding that works better on my son's hair. Also, for detangling and moisturizing, a very good product is Giovanni direct leave-in weightless moisture conditioner. It's unscented. I dilute it in a spray bottle and use that daily to detangle when I comb in the mornings. That will help with frizz too. I was only able to find it at Ulta where I live, but you can buy it online too.
