Ok...so about 2 months ago my son's crib rail broke. I was really frustrated and scared and called Pottery Barn a million times (with no return calls) I wanted to know if I should be concerned, would it happen to his twin sisters crib, was there a recal... My mom suggested at the time that I try to report it to consumer affairs since it could pose a hazard. Luckily I was there when it happened. We fixed the crib and the rail seems secure but am I crazy to keep my twins in their cribs with all this recall and concern in the air??? I was thinking about putting them in toddler beds when it first happened but I didnt think they were ready. They will be 2 1/2 in January. So I am thinking at this point I should make the move since I already had an issue with my sons crib. Any suggestions for twins who are sharing a room? I'm afraid they will be up to no good together!! ;) Shoudl I just secure the railings so they dont drop down anymore? Any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
A very scared mommy

Hi Danielle,

I have 4 1/2 year old twin girls. They have been in toddler beds since they were able to climb out of their cribs. Think it was around 2 1/2 but don't remember. But what I do remember is wishing they were still in cribs. Bed time became very difficult once they could easily get out of bed. It coincided with potty training also creating an excuse to get up, "mommy I have to go potty." If you have the room I would strongly suggest twin beds and skip the toddler beds. We used toddler bed because of space restrictions but I think I would have preferred a twin trundle bed - I think we would have all been more comfortable. Good luck

Our railing broke when my daughter was 18 months. For the last 6 months it has been fine since my husband put wire ties on it to hold the railing in place. I am not moving her to a toddler bed until she can climb out of this one. Toddler bed are really for us cause they are cute and tiny but really none of then are durable. It would be cheaper in the long run to just get a regular bed with a safety railing. Good Luck

Hi Danielle,

If Pottery Barn hasn't returned your calls and offered to fix or replace your broken crib then I would make a complaint to the Consumer Product Saftey Commission (CPSC). Thay have a very friendly website and should investigate to make sure that it is only a one time occurrance and not a cronic problem.

I don't know your children, so I don't know if it is to early to move them to toddler beds. Safety wise I don't see it being a problem since they are low to the ground and have the safety rails. You know your children best and if you aren't ready then maybe you should wait till you want to deal with the freedom that comes along with using toddler beds.

I would definitely do something about the broken crib, don't want to see your children or anyone else's get hurt.

Good luck,
S.

Hi Danielle
Since there are recalls on a crib, and in our church family we lost a baby twin because of that crib, I would move them to toddler beds. 3 or the 4 of mine were in beds by the age of 2 1/2 and the oldest wasn't because we had not bought beds and he was not complaining about the crib.
It has been all over the news, so maybe you have even heard it. They are obviously shocked to have it on the news now as the baby died about 2 years ago.
Well, it wouldn't be worth the worry of it for me. With my twin girls I put a full mattress on the floor after they fell out of the crib, and then out of the twin beds. They tried so hard to be together in those days. Today they are trying so hard to be individuals. I guess it is the same as when they were newborn people argued with me that they were certainly identical and by 13 they argued about being twins. Growing up!! It is wonderful, when you get there
I would take my clue from their reaction to your call. They are not responding because they don't have to, and therefore you take the next step. In fact I would call one more time and say, I am calling my lawyer or whatever you are going to do if I don't hear from you by and you name a date. Then they know that you are serious and plan to do something. In the meantime check recalls by searching -- recalls + cribs and see what turns up.
God bless you and your decisions

personally if something broke on my crib i would demand either my money back or a properly functioning new one. our children spend more than half of their baby/toddler life in these things without our supervision. i would take both cribs out and break out the pack and plays until you are ready for them to be in beds.

i think they are a waste of money for a short time.. i went with the reg. bed.. but only put the mattress on the floor.. when they were 3.. i added the box spring.. and after about 2 months .. i added the bed frame.. it was great.. good luck... toddler beds are just small beds.. near to the floor.. so a reg. mattress works great..

I think a lot depends on how your children go to sleep at night, too. I always had to lay with my daughters, so I ended up getting a full size mattress (without a frame so it was lower to the ground). My youngest daughter has been out of the crib since before her 1st birthday! If she had been one of those children that could soothe herself to sleep in her crib and not try to climb out of it all the time, I would have kept her in the crib a lot longer. Once the rails are gone, those little ones can keep coming out of their rooms at any time of night!

If you have the freedom of just setting your twins in their cribs at night and leaving them there, I would keep them in the cribs as long as they can't climb out or hurt themselves. That being said, I would also fix the rail so it doesn't slide up and down anymore.

Best of luck and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Hi! I am goign through this with my soon-t0-be 17 mos. old. He bed shares with us but we have a twin bed and want to transition him to that in out room. Of course, we bought bed rails then if that is good we will transition him into his nursery. I figure 18 mos. is enough to sleep with mom and dad even though it has been a dream situation. We are thinking about baby number 2 and I do not want him still sleeping there with us with baby number 2 because it would be very unsafe for all involve. I hear the standard to transition to toddler bed is 2 years or 32 inches. I have a tall boy so he matches the criteria.

Good luck to us both.
