My son is only 15 months old and I already have him in a toddler bed. I sit by the foot of his bed and watch cartoons with him until he falls asleep.

Just take the side rail off the crib to see how he does with getting in and out on his own. Put the mattress down to the lowest level. It's a change for him, cheaper for you until you decide to buy a twin size bed. We never used a toddler bed for our 3 boys. The comfort of the crib, but with the independence of getting in and out of bed on their own.
Hope this helps,
D.

I switched my oldest daughter when she was barely 1 as she was climbing out. Taking off the side rail was not an option as it made the crib unstable. We didn't have any problems except getting her to stay in bed for nap.

I just switched my youngest daughter last night and she is 22 months old. She is now in a twin size bed on the floor. She loves having the extra room (she is all over the place when she sleeps) and we had no problems. Just make sure to baby-proof his room first, including securing the dresser to the wall. Too many kids are killed every year when they try to climb up their dresser and it topples over on them.

Good luck,
K. E.

Hi M.,
My best advice is to get a crib tent. You can get them at Babies R Us. It is just a mesh tent that is dome shaped that fits over the crib. Each night it will get easier and he will get used to it. My son wasnt ready for a toddler bed and neither was my husband or I. The crib tent was a god send. He actually slept through the night again...before the crib tent he was up at all hours and him nor I were getting much sleep! Hope this helps. Good Luck!

I would say if he can crawl out it's time to move him out of the crib!
If you don't think he's ready fo an actual bed... Just place a matress on the floor, he'll learn. Just make sure you child-proof completely!!!

IF HE IS CLIMBING OUT YOU MIGHT WANT TO CHANGE HIM TO A TODDLER BED . HE COULD FALL AND HURT HIS SELF.. MY SON IS 17 MONTHS OLD AND I SWITCHED HIM LIKE A MONTH AGO JUST BECAUSE I WAS MOVING AND THOUGHT IT WOULD BE A GOOD TIME.. LUCKILY MY SON IS GOOD ABOUT IT AND DOESNT GET OUT HUNDRED TIMES A NIGHT LIKE MY OLDEST DOES. I WOULD GO AHEAD AND SWITCH HIM

Hi, M..
My four year old started crawling out of his crib at about 21 months old and right around the time he turned 22 months old he fell while trying to climb out. He was fine, just scared, but that day I decided to buy him a toddler bed. I bought him a race car bed and he was sleeping in it just fine within two days. I would put him into a bed before he falls getting out of the crib. Good luck with the switch. It may not be easy, but at least he'll be safe.

The right time to put your child into a toddler bed is totally up to you, but 19 months seems a little young to me. What if he gets up in the middle of the night and starts wandering around? Before you spend money on a toddler bed (and I know, you'll have to buy one eventually anyway...)try one of those tents that go over the crib. It has zippers that are difficult for a toddler to open, and it would keep him safe in his crib. I know they are sold at "one step ahead", but they might have them at babies r us too. Any choice you make will be the right one if it works for you.
Good luck!

I out my daughter in a toddler bed before she was even 1. I had to cause she would cry every time I put her in her crib for some reason. She was happy in my bed even if I was't in it or on the couth. So I started by puting a toddler matterss on the floor so if she roll off she didn't get hurt. I did that untill she lesrn how to stay on the mattress then I moved it in to the fram and put a TALL dresser on the side so she couldn't roll off very easy but I could still get to her easly. She loved it and it made it so she would sleep longer and it was easier to lay with her while reading her bedtime story to her. So I really tink a toddler bed is a great idea because of the effect it had on my daughter and me.

Hi M.
I would start putting him in a toddler bed for safety reasons. If he's climbing out of it he could injure himself. With a toddler bed, he can get up and go easier then taking a chance of losing his grip and falling.

Also you might want consider another safety mechanism if you have stairs in yr house.

good luck,
A. a.

I put all three of my daughters in a toddler bed as soon as they were able to get out of the crib. If you have steps, I suggest a gate at the top. Otherwise, I think this is a good time.
Also, if you are looking for an employment opportunity, RCN in Wilkes Barre is hiring.
To apply you can visit http://www.rcn.com/application code: RCNPA
Please let me know if there is anything I might be able to assit you with for your children. I am very blessed and I do not want to hear of any children going without what they need.
I have 3 daughters ages 16, 12 & 4. Maybe I have some things you could use.
God Bless you!
