I never even gave a second thought to using cloth diapers when I was pregnant or over the past year of my daughters life. But, I recently found a website that has given me MUCH insite on what is REALLY in the everyday products that we use including disposable diapers!!

Now that my daughter is one is it worth investing in cloth at this point? Has anyone ever made this switch and how did it work out? Was it hard to go from disposable to cloth? There are SOOOO many cloth options out there I dont even know where to start!! Any recommendations? Perferably ones that are easier to use for the daycare provider.

Thanks for your help!

I started using cloth on my son when my daughter was born. He was a year old. Right now I'm using Bum Genius and I like them a lot. They are a lot like disposables but you wash them. I always used the ones with pins and plastic pants so I'm really liking the newer style. Good luck!

My daughter is 16 months and I switched just 2 months ago. It was a little hard for me. Disposables are so convenient that it was hard to go to the cloth. To be honest, the first week I thought I was crazy and almost gave up. The second week was a little easier and now, I absolutely love them! If you decide to switch, my advice is just to stick it out for a while, even if it seems hard. I switched to gDiapers and I love them! I use the cloth inserts most of the time, but I love that they have biodegradable/flushable inserts, too. I take those with me when I go out places so I don't have to carry a poopy cloth home. I highly recommend them! Plus, they are super cute!

Their site has so much information about them as well as videos to see how they work. They also have wonderful customer service.

I've been looking into cloth diapers for #3. I stopped by a local boutique type store and she answered a lot of questions for me. So many people have different favorites. I was told that the Fuzzi Bunz are their best sellers around my area. The store was also offering a 3 week trial package deal, where you get to try one of each diaper. There are disposable liners and their are also diapers that break down in 100 days (I think) and are the same price as huggies I believe. Google cloth diapers and your home town to see if any stores pop up. Also take the average you spend on diapers right now and times that by 12 months or more, then price out cloth diapers.

I didn't make the switch until our daughter was 15 months, and I regretted not doing it sooner. I was intimidated by the laundry. Turns out it was SOOO easy. And while we didn't get the full cost savings, we would have continued to use diapers and pull ups for another 2+ years, so we definitely saved a TON of money.

We used FuzziBunz and BumGenius and loved them. They are really easy to change and very easy to clean. I also know many who use G diapers and like them.

Good luck!

I am actually going to use cloth diapers with our twins that are due in 3 months. I think if you are interested, you should give it a try. We have added up the savings & it is tremendous! There is a store in Newton Healthy Baby Boutique (601 N. Main, ###-###-####) that carries all different types of cloth diapers & they are VERY knowledgable about the pros & cons of each style. I am going to use GroVia. Good Luck with your choice!

I don't think it's too late! The best bet for daycare, is a pocket, or all in one diaper. That type of diaper can just be taken off and put in a wet bag, just like a disposable is taken off. (except, you don't throw cloth away...of course!!) Pocket diapers are great for night time, because you can put more inserts in for extra absorbency. One size diapers are great, because they last from around birth to potty training. They seem pretty expensive at first, but think of what you save. You'll make up for the cost in just a few months of not having to buy disposables. Also, you already have them, if you have more children. The type of detergent you use is VERY important with cloth diapers. It needs to have no brighteners, ensymes, or chemicals. Rockin Green, which can be ordered online (it lasts a long time) is specifically made for cloth diapers. In my opinion, cloth is SO worth it.

kellyscloset.com is a great store for diapers and everything you'd need. Here is a link, for starting cloth diapering, that kellys closet has:

It's not to late at all. First off make sure that your daycare will even allow it. In Utah, I have been told (I still need to do my research on it to make sure they weren't making excuses) that state funded (i'm on assistance) can't use cloth (which I find absurd because there are kids who have allergy's to disposables) All in ones are the easiest for daycares or anyone babysitting. It's just like a disposable, but cloth (duh, lol) I'm going to be purchasing them for my son when he goes to his dads. I really like my prefold diapers with a cover (if you go to my blog about diapering my large son it has a section that explains all of the different types http://largebummies.blogspot.com/)
Isn't it disgusting what all is in the diapers?? The fact that they took out (I forgot chemical name) in tampons because of the link to toxic shock syndrome, but they feel free to put it in diapers. Next to brand new skin!
I hear that bumgenius is really great. But if you daughter is on the bigger side, it might not be worth it. Try finding something that goes to 40 lbs so that you can be sure it will last a while. That is what my blog is basically about because I started at 5 months, but my son was already 26 lbs (he is HUGE!!) He's already outgrown his Thirsties Duo ( I didn't do my research very well and they say the go to 40 lbs but mom's say it's more like 35. They also don't do well on large tummies.) A lot of diapers only go to 35 so I needed to find something that lasted a bit. I've decided I need to try making them and perhaps selling them for large babies. I am going to be trying bummies next and then envibums wraps. Let me know if you need help!

The ONLY reason it is late to switch is that you won't get all of the cost savings that you would get if you started younger. However, if you have future children, you will be able to use the same diapers with them, and that will save you money. Check out Mothering Magazine - their most recent issue had a great article about the different types of cloth diapers and their pros and cons. Everyone has different favorites - some like the all-in-ones like Bum Genius (very easy, especially for daycare, probably), whereas I prefer fitted cloth like Motherease with Bummis covers. If you have any stores nearby that have a good selection, stop by and ask if they know of any cloth diapering seminars. I know our local Green store has seminars, and so does one of our local family centers. Good luck!

I agree with the other posters - we switched at around 8 months and it was great. And, your daughter shouldn't be going through as many diapers now so you shouldn't have to buy as many. Our first daycare said they could not use them, but we're with an in home now and she loves them as well - works just like a disposable except she puts it in a bag for us to pick up.

I have a friend who recently opened a cloth diapering store (online), she loves talking to parents and telling them the pros (and cons) and what you can expect. Let me know if you want the info. You'll find that most cloth diapering sources are great though. If you can, find an actual store where you can see them before you buy anything - you'll note different brands fit differently, are thinner/thicker, etc. You might want to try a few brands before you stock up (we use pockets only for daddy and daycare ease).

I feel it's totally worth it! We switched when my son was 2 so he was only in them for a year and I still saved money!

Food for thought:

1. Cloth diapers can be resold once your little kiddo is out of them. Take good care of them and get part of your investment back.
2. Go for AIO (All In One) diapers. I like bum genius but Fuzzi Bunz are great too. Bumkins are good and sold at Costco.
3. Invest in Kushie "Disposable Liners". Looks like TP and helps with YOUR transition from disposable to cloth. You can lift out and flush most of the poop.
4. Get a wet bag and toilet hose - worth the money IMO.

Best of luck to you!!

Can't speak to which one you might choose, but your daughter will probably be in diapers for the next year, at least. If you're concerned, switch!

I also didn't really give it a 2nd thought until recently. I used disposable with #1, but when my 2nd son was about 9 mos I switched to cloth 85% of the time and really love it. I did go with the FuzziBunz perfect fit diapers as well as a few Thirsties with covers. They are SOOOOO easy to use and I really wish I had done it sooner! I haven't yet tried the cloth for overnight since I'm afraid of losing sleep, but I should try it out soon.

Checkout www.nappyshoppe.com Could go with hybrid gdiapers (cloth and biodegradable inserts), AIO's or pockets! There is a Yahoo gdiapers group I belong to with a wealth of helpful mamas, as well as the diaperswappers forum, where you can pick up gently used dipes as well as info.
