Thyroid Testing

About a year ago I had some blood work done, and I was convinced I might have hypothyroidism. It would explain several symptoms I have had for years. However, my blood work came back normal for everything.

Now I am just sitting here wondering about it. I know we aren't doctors here, but does anyone have any experience with thyroid problems? I was curious if it's something that sometimes doesn't show up on tests? Perhaps I should talk to a doctor about being re-tested?

I've read that thyroid problems can cause hives (urticaria). I have had weird outbreaks of hives since I was 6 years old. They are less intense and longer between now that I am older, but I never know when it will happen again. I thought maybe I had a thyroid problem & it was the answer to the hives. Could a thyroid test results be different DURING a hive outbreak versus no outbreak?

Thanks for any thoughts. I may try to get an appointment with my old family doctor in my hometown (45 mins away) if it's worth pursuing again.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for everyone's responses! I think once things settle down with us moving into our house, getting passed our wedding anniversary, daughter's birthday, and our snow ski trip (yes, all occurring in February!), I will try to get an appointment with an endocrinologist. I have located a local office with 2 doctors that I might try.

Have to echo the others. Go see an endocrinologist.
I'm hypo thyroid. But for me, I feel good at a specific number. If I vary from that, even in the "normal" range, I feel miserable.
Luckily, my doctor got that and was willing to vary my meds until we found a good level, even when I was in the normal range.

I have hypothyroidism, and while I'm not a doctor I know that sometimes your blood levels can be within the normal range, and you can still have symptoms. My blood levels are on the low side of the normal range, closer to hyperthyroidism than hypothyroidism, but I still have symptoms of hypothyroidism, even though I've been on the medication (levothyroxine) for years. I had radioactive iodine though, because I had Grave's disease.

I think if you've had symptoms of hypothyroidism, it couldn't hurt to see a doctor again and have it re-tested. Make sure you find out what your actual levels are, though, because sometimes if they're within the normal range, they'll just tell you that you're fine, but if your number is at the high end of the normal range, you could benefit from medication. I've met a lot of people who weren't diagnosed because they were technically in the normal range, but when they took the medication and lowered the number a bit, they felt much better.

I hope that helps, Good luck! :-)

My sister went trough this. She has hypothyroidism and is much better after starting her medication. She had the doctor run a specturm of blood tests (she is an RN). Thyriod problems do not always show up right away.

Get the blood work Barb suggested, but not by GP. Go to an endocrinologist.

I'm hypo-thyroid. I had 2 pregnacies before and never had any thyroid issues. My 3rd pregnacy they did alot of blood(when I got pregnant) and nothing came back wrong.(no thyroid issues) After my son was born,I had a hard time losing the extra baby weight. Had bad depression and was beyond tired. I have my mother and aunt who both has underactive thyroid. Got my blood drawn 5 months later and sure enough I had underactive thyroid disease. Don't know if I delvelop it after he was born or what. They had me on a 50mg and a few months later got blood drawn again and he move me up to 100mg. I been on that same dose for about a year and a half. So I guess it can show up. It's also a gentic thing. So if anyone in your family has it,I guess you have a chance of getting it too. Hope that helps!!

YOu need to go see and endocronologist for further testing. I had Thyroid issues and the doctors said nope...results normal finally third pregnancy and and voila they finally believed me..I was on the brink of making an appt with an endocronologist myself. It's worth pursuing.

I would request that a full thyroid panel be done again. But I wouldn't stop there I would request rast or blood draw allergy testing, hormone levels and celiac testing. It is worth pursuing. Hypo usally also involves low energy, weight gain, skin issues, hair issues, poor sleep but these too can be in those with hormone inbalance such as pcos(insulin resistance) and celiac disease(gluten intolerance). I would visit a metabolic endocrinologist.

Never heard that about the hives, but after being referred to an endocrinologist (just in case) when my levels were borderline during my last pregnancy, he put me on Synthroid (and regretted that he hadn't seen me sooner!). I think I'd been low normal for a while, but after going (and staying) on the Synthroid, lots of other symptoms I'd had disappeared. I had a lot of traditional symptoms though. My understanding is "they" are thinking of changing the range of what's considered normal. I think each person may have slightly different needs. Go see a good specialist.

my vote is "no"....it's not thyroid. Your theories don't follow hypothyroid symptoms. Been living with it for years.

but I do recommend the other testings suggested.
