Think It Would Be Pointless And

My kids are both just starting to go pee in the potty. They are 2.5 and 3.5 y/o. They both wear size 6 diapers now and the cost was starting to become out of control before they starting going pee in the potty. Now we are saving a few diapers a day, thank goodness. I know they are still going to need diapers at night? i think from what I've read most parents will keep them in diapers at night even while potty training. I think it is a good idea. I am not really sure about this whole potty training thing anyhow. Do you think it is a bad time to start with the cloth diapers?
Also I was looking online at the prices and it looks like just to start them in cloth diapers is so expensive?!!! Like 300 or so to get everything you need. I was looking at fuzzi bunz. What do you use? How much do you think it will run us? any tips to cut down the cost?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I think it would be pointless and expensive at this point. It is really too bad i couldn't do it earlier but we just now got our own washer and dryer. Thanks again for helping me with that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you're potty training and just need them for nighttime, I don't get the cost.

If it's just nighttime, I would buy two dozen diapers, some rubber pants and some diaper pins. You can use just a five gallon bucket for a diaper pail - just put some lysol in the pail with water and you have a diaper pail.

For laundry, dump the entire pail, water and all, into the washer and spin and then wash as usual.

I ALWAYS used cloth diapers - cheaper, better for the environment, better for the child.

If you're only going to use them at night then you only need enough for a wash cycle. Determine how often you would want to wash them and go from there. But they don't have to be expensive. (Go to cottonbabies.com) You can buy a dozen prefolds for cheap. That'd be enough for nights. Then a couple of covers per kid and two snappis. It'd be around seventy bucks for the brands I own. They usually have sales and discounts. Or you could even buy training pants for nighttime that are washable. I would advice you to buy those instead of diapers.

At this point I would not do cloth. But since you asked. You can shop for used cloth diapers. There are forums out there like this one where others sell their used ones. Also check Craigslist. I see them on there every once in awhile.

As PrincessMomma said, you don't have to buy A. entire set if you are just going to use them at night. I love FuzziBunz, but I never had enough money to buy A. entire set at once, so I bought what I needed at the time and added one or two more occasionally. Depending on how often you do laundry, you may only need a couple per child. Good luck!

I buy used covers and new inserts. Its just cheaper and easier. I also keep a bag of disposable pullups around cause sometimes cloth just doesnt cut it, and frankly I am so tired some times I dont want to run a load of just diapers daily. So when I a feeling less like super mom I throw one of those plastic contraptions on. I just got my 3 year old completely off any diapers or pull ups and now just have my almost 2 year old potty training. So I can NOT wait for the day he is fully trained. AHHHHH

At this age, I think it would be pointless...

I will say that when I FIRST started potty training my DD, I put her in cloth training pants. (I bought them for like $5.00 at Walmart...) They are pretty much thick underwear...

Then I hit up the incontinence aisle, and bought some Tena pads. I lined the training pants with those, and it worked great. After she started getting the concept of using the potty, I put her into regular underwear with no trainers.

I am one of those moms who went cold turkey with potty training: once we ditched the diapers we were done with them for good: mornings and nights!
DD was 2.5 and waking up dry for months at that point - BUT once we ditched the diapers went back to wetting her bed for about a week. I used disposable mattress pads and double layers of sheets. After a week she was more confident pottying during the day and the nighttime accidents stopped.

At this stage I would not buy any new cloth diapers. Look online for used ones or used cloth pull ups. Personally I would just get some diaper covers over training underwear if your boys are not ready for nighttime undies (regularly wake up wet) yet. Cloth is a good way for potty training resistant kids to get the hang of it.
Good luck!

I use Easy Ups (I was saving the points) for my 4 yr old who can't quite make it through the night most of the time yet. I would look at whether or not you want cloth diapers or a pull up alternative - they make both. The other thing to consider is price per use. Yes, cloth is expensive, but sit down and think about how many diapers or pull ups you use per kid per month. Cloth can be rewashed and used for both kids. Are you going with diapers only at night? If so, then don't look at buying 20 diapers. I would frankly buy a lot less - like maybe 12 or even 6. You just need two diapers a night and can wash them in between. We used Bum Genius with the big inserts for DD but were not using them consistently at night when she was bigger simply because I got lazy (her daycare didn't accept the cloth so she used Pampers).

The other benefit of cloth diaper covers is you can put one on over the underpants for those oops moments out and about when you are first training. I didn't put the insert in. I only used the cover.

There are also sites that sell used diapers and you can either buy used or you can sell them later.

You could buy used cloth diapers. Cloth diapers are good for potty training because the child can feel when they are wet. We just used pull ups. Keep in mind you can use a pull up more than one night if they haven't actually been peed in. Some kids do take a lot longer to be night trained, but not all. My kids were day and night trained in the same week. If they are waking up dry there is no need to keep them in night time diapers.

At 2.5 and 3.5 YEARS old there's no point in cloth diapers. You're toilet training. It would be wasted money.

whoo. why the attitude?
cloth diapers should be used when babies are infants. not when you're trying to potty train.
