That info is right- only 3rd and 5th have to pass the test to pass, however, TAKS scores can be a determining factor in retention if there are concerns there. Also, in some districts/schools, they may offer summer programs that would be beneficial to her, maybe even inexpensively or free. Yes, too much emphasis is put on one test, but if I were her parent, I would definitely set a meeting with teacher/principal to see what is going on. How much did she need to pass- a question or two or several? What were her reading grades all year? If she is not to be held back, what can she do this summer to improve her reading skills? The test only gets harder, so better to work on things now while she is still young and CARES about learning.

From what I have heard only Third, Fifth, and Eighth grades must pass TAKS tests to be promoted. In third grade they must pass the reading. In fifth grade they must pass reading and math, and in eighth grade they must pass reading and math. Hope that helps. Sometimes I think too much imphasis is placed on the students passing the tests so that they stress out and do not do as well as if they had been relaxed. Anyway, I would work with your niece so that she is ready for the test next year, but make it so she is so confident she cannot be shaken by the "need" to pass it.

yes doesn't matter....she will go to 5thgrade. Only if she failed it in 3rd.

She will progress to 5th grade b/c she doesn't have to pass 4th grade TAKS to be promoted.

Depending on the district and the district criteria...a student could be retained for failing the TAKS test in 4th grade but usually it is in conjunction with other things. It is highly unlikely unless the child is struggling in classwork, school benchmarks, and other subject areas. Summer school is usually required for these students, however. On our report cards we usually state that the child must attend summer school and be successful in order to be promoted to the next grade level. Our district school board requires these students attend summer school. Only 3rd and 5th grade students will be retained ...but generally most of these students end up passing the retakes. Very few in my experience have not passed the retakes and very few have been retained. I can maybe think of one in the past several years that was retained and that was mainly because the child was also failing course work and severly behind. Didn't qualify for special services etc.
