has anyone developed a rash under nose when sick. I have had strep for a week now. on antibiotics. But last night and this morning a painful sore rash has developed under my nose. Doesn't feel good and doesn't look pleasant. I have been treating it with hydrocordozon cream 1% and it seams to be getting worse. This is what the nurse over the phone suggested.

I know that with my stuffyness and dripping I have been irritatin the area and have been using vasoline for a few days to keep it moist...but whatever is going on now hurts :(

Suggestions...have you been through this before. how long did it take to heal. I am so tempted to head to walk-in and see if there is something more i can do.

What can I do next?

When I was twelve years old, I got a cold. Then I got what looked like a small water blister on the skin between my mouth and nose, what my parents thought was because of my constantly runny nose. The blister broke, and that area of skin got caked, dry, cracked--and "the rash" kept spreading. Finally, my nose was plugged up tight and I could barely close my mouth because the skin between my mouth and nose was so tight. Mom finally took me to the doctor, and he just about shot her. Seems I had contacted a really, really bad strep or bacteria or virus or something that, that if it had gone through my nose and into my brain, would have killed me. I was on some very strong antibiotics and salve for a couple months.

Just a note that if the Vaselin doesn't seem to be cutting it and the rash/soreness doesn't go away and/or gets worse to make sure you get in to see someone again. You definitely don't want it being whatever it is that I had.

It sounds like a herpes simplex virus. Most of us have it in our bodies and when our bodies are stressed due to illness, stress, etc., the virus comes out and at first looks and feels like a cold sore. It is very contagious so caution should be used not to get it on your hands, wash cloth, etc. until it heals. If it is herpes the best thing to do is not touch it and keep it completely dry, no ointments, vaseline, etc. It needs to dry up to heal. Sometimes it appears as a cluster of little blisters, just a red itchy rash, etc. It can enlarge over a few days and really hurt. It affects nerve endings in the skin and is actually related to chicken pox and shingles viruses. I'm not aware of any medicines to help clear it up. Just keep it dry and don't touch it.

My girls always get a "raw" upper lip and under nose from colds. We use Aquaphor and it goes away quickly.

Between the antibiotics and the use of vaseline, try an antifungal cream like Lotrisone... Antibiotics can let yeast or fungi grow and vaseline and petroleum products hold moisture in, creating an even better environment for them to grow. If you don't see improvement in by the time your clinic opens again, see your doctor.

Go see the doctor or a dermatologist to get an accurate diagnosis....

Please call your doctor or go to a walk in clinic, this sounds like a reaction to the antibiotics.
