Hello again mommies!! My son is 4 and for about a year now I have been trying to get him to not hold things so close to his face. When he is looking at things, playing with toys, reading...etc., he holds them so close, he goes cross-eyed. He had an eye exam at his 4 year check up and the doctor said his vision was fine.... so I am hoping that this is normal for kids his age. I guess I am just looking for anyone who has had this experience or can just offer some advice for how to correct this - other than telling him he is going to go blind!!! Thanks in advance for any advice you may have!!!
You could also call your nearest childrens hospital and ask the occupational therapy department for a referal to a developmental optomitrist. They will check for visual motor, visual perceptual, depth perception, occular motor, etc, as well as visual accuity. Some problems with vision can still exist even if the actual sight is 20/20.

Don't tell him he is going to go blind.
Go back, or to another, eye doctor.
Make sure the doctor checks each eye separately,
in particular for distance vision.
Make sure the doctor has a procedure
wherein the child cannot fake his answers.
And then let us know what happens.
I would make an appointment with a pediatric ophthalmologist - fast! He should not be doing this, or going cross eyed. He may have passed the vision screening by straining, and he's just learned to adapt. A ped. ophthalmologist is able to thoroughly test your son's eyes, not just relying on what he says he can see. My son has been followed since birth, and we were able to get him the correct prescription at 1 1/2 years old. Please get him in quickly so that his eyes and vision can be corrected while he is still so young! Best of luck!
Do you mean he had the "read the chart" eye exam at Ped's office or he went to a real eye doc? If you haven't yet take him to a real eye doc they do eye exams that are way more in-depth. There could be other eye reasons for him doing this and "reading the big E chart" isn't going to tell you them.

did you have are real eye exam at an eye doc or just a vision check at the pediatrician's office? My son passed his eye exam at the pediatrician's every year and I finally took him to the eye doc and he now has been wearing glasses for almost a year.
