Hello Moms! Our shower has a small separation where the shower wall meets the caulking, before I repair it I want to "clean-out" the mold. Black mold is growing under the caulking and I'm looking for advice on the best way to get rid of it so that I can repair the crack. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!
we use ZEP from Home Depot (about $2-3). It works everytime...nowhere near environmentally sensitive, but it will get rid of the black gunk.
Bleach. If it's under the caulking you'll have to remove the caulk first. No amount of bleach will get the stuff under the caulk. I'm a renter, and there is some mold under the caulking in our bathroom, because that repair guy did a CRAPPY JOB before we moved in. But since I don't own the home, I just try not to look at it too much.
Bleach - spray it on, let it all dry out (you can put a fan on it overnight) then caulk away...
I sprayed the mold area with chlorine (it's stronger if you use the undiluted version). I opened bathroom window, sprayed, left house to work. The mold is gone when I get home in the evening.
I rinsed off before taking a shower or use the bathroom.

Non-toxic options include whitle vinegar, a boric acid solution and grapefruit seed extract. I have also used a product called mold-zyme, which has been helpful.

Not sure this works on black mold, but it works on other molds. Take a toothbrush and dip it in either mouthwash or the white kind of tooth paste with some water. Scrub with the toothbrush and it should come right off. Hope it works for you.

Unfortunately, if there is black mold under the caulking, it is probably behind the tile and it is not a small problem. You can spray bleach on it as a short-term fix but the tile should probably be ripped out and the green board behind replaced. Ugh! I know it sounds like a lot but if left undone, the mold will grow and you and your family will eventually get sick from it.

Try Simple Green and the good thing is it's not toxic
