Sis Has a Feeding Issue

My sister has an 8 month old. She has been trying to get him to eat for several months. When she puts any food in his mouth he holds his mouth open and waits til the food falls out and makes an "icky" face. He really just doesn't want food. Any suggestions? Should have added in that she is making her own food so it's not jarred or anything

What can I do next?

I used to let my babies eat what I was eating by smashing a little up off my plate if he sees you eat it he will eat it too maybe he gets too much attention for not eating and not enough praise for eating well, He will eat when he gets hungry. My granddaughter is somewhat finiky. She likes applesauce on her sponge Bob plate vienna sausages out of th pull top can, she likes crackers and cheese and ham sandwiches and loves refried beans. sometimes change what they are eating to see if that works. Maybe a reward system should be made. tell him if he eats all his food you nwill give him some icecream or take him to the park to play.

Maybe just hasn't found the food he likes yet! Or some kids are very "texture" oriented. My kids rejected all jarred food and also were very opinionated about what went in their mouths. They both loved plain greek style yogurt right from the start though. I made all my babyfood homemade and they ate that much better than the jarred as well. Hope this helps.

If he's developmentally on track for everything else, he's just not ready to eat.

I would put foods in front of him to let him feel, dip his fingers in and taste on his own.

that's all my son did until 12 months when he started to eat in earnest.

there are many cultures who let babies self wean and eat when they are ready and developmentally able to feed themselves.

My daughter did not start eating till she was over 9 months old. Babies get the majority of needed nutrients from breast milk or formula for the first year, so food is more of a novelty for them at this age.

Another thing we experienced with our child - she wouldn't eat anything "mushy" even the nice, organic homemade stuff that I prepared for her. We had to give her teeny tiny cut-up bites of soft fruit and well-steamed veggies. We would set them in front of her and let her feed herself - she never wanted to be spoon-fed.

Hope this helps.

I agree with the other Mama. Have you ever tried the jarred baby food? I would make an "ick" face if you put it in my mouth too!! I made all of our daughters baby food (except for fruit). It is a really simple, you have complete control over what foods they are being fed and you can adjust the texture and thickness of the food to satisfy each individual. All she needs is a food processor or blender to mix the food, clean ice cube trays to freeze it in an a freezer bag to store it in to protect it from freezer burn.
I always started with vegetables such as green beans or peas. Then as the baby gets older you can add small amounts of roast ( I prepare it in the oven with water to cover and no other spices of any sort)You can use the water it cooks in to thin out the food as your process it.
My girls always refused the store bought things, they wanted home made from an early age!!

I've been there. My daughter likes stuff completely pureed and almost liquid or she needs to be able to hold it in her hand and feed herself (avocado, banana, sweet potato). She is only now just starting to branch out and it needs to come off of my plate. As long as the baby is getting nutrients, it should be okay. Sounds like a texture aversion. I'm hoping for my case and your sister's that like all things, this too shall pass.

I had some problems with my daughter. I also made her food and had to switch to organic jarred food. She didn't like the consistency of home made food. Plus at 8 months she was just barely starting to eat.

He could just not be ready for solids. My son is 9 mos. and only really been into actually eating for about 2 weeks. We tried at 6 mos. and no success. He turned his head and absolutely was not interest. We just kept trying every few days. I called him a reluctant eater. Around 8 mos. he would eat with interest maybe twice a week. Each week he got a little more interested and now almost always eats 2 meals a day. But, they are small portions and I never force him to eat it all. If he doesn't seem interested, I try offering him a bite every few minutes (we are also eating as a family) but sometimes it just doesn't happen. Remember... it takes 15-20 times of tasting a food to get kids into the flavor.. don't give up but maybe slow down a little and don't stress about it.

The answer is obvious to me, he is not ready for solids! 8 months is still pretty young - the baby should be eating mostly breastmilk at that age. Just keep trying and eventually he'll come around!

My daughter (#3) would not eat ANY solid foods at all. I breastfed her exclusively until she was 18 months old, as which point, I HAD to cut her off from breastmilk, since she would literally hold out until I saw her again. I left her with someone for 8 hours multiple times, and she still would not eat a thing. I wasn't worried. She finally ate food once I stopped breastfeeding. She didn't get teeth until 12 months, and I found my children really aren't interested in solids until just after their first teeth come in. I think it's nature's way of letting you know when their digestive tract is ready.
