What age did you start taking away sippy cups? I know my children won't have them forever, and my oldest, 3, is already starting to like the "Big Girl Cup", just wondering.

What can I do next?

We still use at 3 only because I don't want anything spilling in my house on the carpeting. If in the kitchen or outside, he gets a big boy cup.

Never used them. Started a regular cup at probably 8 months (give or take). I figured why teach him incorrect lessons about gravity that he would have to relearn. We don't eat or drink in my car.

In my home daycare I start about 18 mos. By about 20-22 mos they only get a regular cup. They are small child size or "juice size" cups. For them to be successful, they need the right size tools!

My DD is one, and uses both. If she has a real cup though, I only give her 1-2 inches of water.

Yes, our daughter quickly moved away from it fairly fast, but I still wanted her to use it in the car.

I had been letting my kids 'practice' with big-girl cups ever since they were six or seven months old so by the time they were a year old and the bottles and formula were gone, they already knew how to drink out of them. By the time they could not fling their cups around and spill everything, which was probably around 2 or 2.5, we didn't do sippies any more unless we were in the car.

My daughter learned to use a regular cup, no lid, at meal times at 14 months. It was required in her daycare by 16 months. She hated sippy cups, so we never used them. Just start with a small glass, half full.

Our daughter started using regular cups at 18 months, but we still use a sippy in the car or in her crib at night. She'll still ask for her sippy cup every once in a while, but usually that's when she's really thirsty and doesn't want to be careful while using a "big girl" cup. :)

We got rid of them when our son was around 15 months old.

Around 18 months. My daughter went to a montessori play group and they encourage children to use regular items eg regular glasses. I started with Ikea plastic cups (6 for $2.50) and now she can drink from anything.

I also was wondering about the sippy cup to "big boy" cup transition. Thanks for asking the question J.! Thanks to everyone else for your answers. My son is 15 months and I'm seriously considering taking the sippy cup. He doesn't drink from bottles or suck a pacifier. He's learning a few new words REALLY fast. I don't want anything interfering with his speech. Again, thanks moms!! :)
