I am having a hard time getting my 13 month old son onto a sippy cup. he loves the bottle with handles...he was breast fed / bottle fed until a month ago and now we are trying to get off the bottle and onto a cup. we have tried all types and even one's with a straw. He gets really mad and now throws a fit if we even try. Hate to go cold turkey as it is hot summer time. Any help would be great!

What can I do next?

Have you seen the transitional cups that have two handles and a bottle-like silicone nipple that you can switch to a few different other styles of spill-proof silicone sippy things. That probably made no sense whatsoever. But that way, it's the same cup, with his favorite two handles, and then it gradually moves them from nipple to sippy cup shape.
I saw them at WalMart tonight, although I have to admit that I haven't had the need to really look into all the features. I'd hate to mislead you!
You could also forget the sippy cup and move him straight to a regular cup. But that sounds like a horrid idea to me, personally. My oldest is 4, and despite my desire to switch to a normal cup, I REALLY like not worrying about spills!
Good luck,

Nubys are wonderful. I had to go cold turkey on my daughter and she now loves her nuby. Do not give him the option of the bottle. If he has the option he will take it everytime. When he is thirsty he will take the sippy cup. You just have to hang in there! You can get nubys at walmart for $2.00 a piece. Good Luck!

Take all the bottles away, out of sight, out of the house and just only offer sippy cups, he will eventually get it. If he sees a bottle and knows you will cave he will put up a fight.
Go cold turkey and he will be fine. Out of sight out of mind literally, just say "bottles all gone" and have them gone.
Let him pick out his own fun cup too, maybe bypass sippies and have him try to drink out of a small cup like a big boy.
Just don't give him the bottles as he will continue to pitch a fit if he knows you will give in.

I agree Nubys are great! I cut my daughter off cold turkey. I started her off w/ the nubys with handles and now she has the ones w/o handles. She loves them and drinks great out of them.

i used a more gradual route with my ds. i purchased a cup that seemed most liek his bottle. i began giving it to him with some milk or juice at meal times. he would play with it, shake it, chew on it and eventually he began drinking from it. we kept his bottle around at "bottle times" like before a nap or before bed. once he was drinking well from a cup we began to decrease the amount of fluid he was having from a bottle with his bedtime bottle being the last to go. it took a while but there were less tears and fits this way and in the over all scheme of things i think it wasn't a huge deal having the bottle around a little longer especially when it is hot and our little ones need to stay hydrated. don't stress too much and do what works for yu and your litte guy. he WILL get it eventually! gl, N.
