Mamas & Papas -

Sometimes you don't know that your way is pretty mediocre until you see someone else do a thing much better. My girlfriend threw our DS in the tub along with hers. She gave him a proper scrubdown, and a thorough hairwashing. I was impressed. I had never done more than tossing some soapy water over our boy.

In any event, inspired, I think it might be a good idea to give him a proper scrub at least once a week. What no tears shampoo do you guys recommend? Our DS has curls, which lean towards frizzy, esp at the back of his head.

Thanks a bunch,
F. B.

What can I do next?

I second California Baby products all the way. If you have a Target near by, I've found them their at a lower cost than most places.

Everyone is different when it comes to washing and I think hair washing also depends on how much hair a kid or baby has. My daughter was born with a full head of thick wavy hair so I have to scrub it (she had cradle cap as a baby and what a pain).

I like California Baby products they are all natural so I don't have to worry about unwanted chemicals. They also make a conditioner (we use that too) to help get out the knots and I will sometimes leave a little bit in to control the frizzes. These products are tears free and safe for new born infants as well.

PS: your little one is still very young so I don't think he would be getting too dirty, just wait until he comes in covered with mud and offering you a mud pie.

Oh don't beat yourself up so much. Just cause you do it differently doesn't mean it's mediocre. Your guy is pretty little still...how dirty can he be? ;)

Up until the last 2 weeks i have been using Johnsons bedtime bath for both my kids (ages 2 and 3). It is no tears and has a nice calming lavendar scent that helped them calm down for the evening. They were ready to move on to big kid shampoo but i think once i run out i may go back to johnsons as it left their hair softer (my 2 year old has a lot of hair for her age).

My DD has curls, too, so early on we asked the pediatrician what we could use. She said try Dove. So we use Aveeno wash and shampoo for most of her and put a dab of Dove conditioner on her head (intense moisturizing formula) and work it through with our fingers while she plays with her ducks. I give DD a quick once-over and the actual washing isn't much. She's typically not that dirty (even if she's been outside) and it's more to rinse the pollen off her than it is to get her detailed. If I need to "do" her hair, I give her a bath in the AM or I use detangler.

I think that your attitude is freakin awesome. Someone else would just come here and whine being offended that their friend thought their kid was dirty or something :)

Anyways, my mil does Maleluca and she gets us the kid shampoo from there. Really expensive, and my 4 year old usually dumps it all out almost immediately, so I just get the generic stuff at the store that goes on body and hair. I'm a hairstylist and I know better, but...

For his curls that tend to get frizzy, put in a bit of conditioner or a detangling/conditioning spray after the bath. Also, don't scrub his hair dry with the towel, gently kind of 'milk ' them with the towel and allow them to form on their own without combing, you can help them with your finger, but that's it.

I use Aveeno shampoo with both of mine. But I also use conditioner to keep the back-of-the-head frizz to a minimum.

LOL...I remember the first time my mom started to wash my son's hair! I said "He hasn't been working in a coal mine!" WE still tease her about it.

I always used Loreal Kids shampoo when my son was little. I think they have a shampoo/conditioner combo which might help the frizz.

I use Johnson and Johnson - but with curls you would need a light conditioner - for this I would reccomend Infusium23 and put it in a spray bottle (it's a liquid conditioner). DO NOT RUB the curls, do this gently, gently dry the curls with a paper towel by squeezing vs rubbing and you will see reduced frizz in the curls. I have always washed like your friend and I have always used Johnson and Johnson products - currently using the Vanilla Oatmeal for my son's sensitive prone skin.
