Seeking Referrals for DO or Holistic Pedi in Denton

I need some advice about my 12 mo old. She is a rather small baby, only weighing 16 lbs, 13 oz at 12 mo. Her development is fine, but she is under 3% of babies her age. I know that isn't a litmus test for health, but her current Pedi has sent us for blood work 3 times in six months, she is concerned about her nourishment and just came short of telling me she was under-nourished. My 5 year old only weighs 30 lbs, and I only weighed 17 lbs at a year.
My questions are these? I'm considering switching to a DO or a pedi with a more natural approch (dealing with vaccinations, alternate health recommendations rather than anti-biotics, etc.) Does anyone know of any doctors in the Denton area?
Also, what foods could I switch to? We already do yogurt several times a day, she has been breastfed up until a few weeks ago, she is starting to drink more whole milk. She eats tons of grits, mashed potatos, baby cereal with 2 scoops of Next Step lipil...I'm doing the gerber graduates, cheese, etc. Any other suggestions? For my 5 year old also, she eats great, but I can't seem to get any weight on her! In this day of over weight children, I'm having a hard time getting mine caught up.

What can I do next?

I highly recommend Dr. Thomas Newell, DrNP, FNP-BC. He is a Board Certified Pediatric & Family Nurse Practitioner, and also a Homeopathic Master Clinician. He runs the Family Care Center, 1214 Primrose Lane, Denton, TX 76201. ###-###-####. Very nice man, very easy to talk to and share your concerns. He has a natural approach and really strives to meet your family's needs without the alarmist attitude that you might find with other pediatricians, (although he will prescribe antibiotics if that is what is needed, he just doesn't push medications on patients if they aren't warranted.) I think you'll find him to be refreshingly easy-going and will hopefully give you some answers you are seeking with regards to your daughter's diet, etc.

Best of luck to you!

Are your kids active? Do they seem sluggish or sickly? If they are healthy, just below average in weight, you may just have petite kids as another poster said. I mean the way averages are formed is because some kids are above and some below. We need our doctors, but sometimes they get too caught up in their averages. I have a three and a half year old who still hasn't been able to top 30 lbs. He's been hovering at 29 and a half for the last year. He's very active and healthy. He's changing clothes sizes, but it doesn't register in the scale. My daughter is 8 months old and has just hit 15 lbs. She is also very active. She's almost walking to keep up with big brother. Anytime my pediatrician mentions weight and ratio, I start rattling off about all the food they eat and how active they are. He generally shuts up about it all then. I mean I have a 3 year old who will eat salad, loves beets, and will only eat french fries when we go out to eat. However cheese is his favorite food ever.

Don't worry unless your kids aren't healthy and active.

dear K.,

Lots of questions. I don't know if the doctor already asked. did they check for any food allergies? they could be allergic to soy, milk, gluten/wheat and that's could be why they don't absorb nutrients even if they're eating "well". not wanting to be gross....but, how are their bowel movements? milk allergies can show up as constipation or loose stools. do you give them vitamins? for my 2 I've been giving them infant vitamins from twinn labs. I get it at sprouts or wholefoods. do they get enough healthy fats in their diets? do they get enough protein in their diet? should they eat more eggs? nuts, peanuts, etc? (first do the allergy testing). I hope you find an aswer. Good luck and God Bless! keep looking until you have the right answer for you and your babies! ~C.~

I did see Dr. Severn once, he is a DO in Denton, but I would actually prefer to see the DO's at Lake Cities Medical. There are a few there, so check that out..it is on Swisher and my husband, a chiropractor in training, speaks highly of them. Too bad they dont accept CHIPS or my kids would be there!! However, with your family history, I would quite frankly tell the doctor to back off! Has your daughter had a dramatic drop in weight percentage? I understand caution, but it sounds like you are just a family of petite folks! (We on the other hand are not, and often get asked if my 2 year old is 4, but that is another story!) Continue what you are doing, always allowing for extra calories where needed. Ranch dressing on things has always been suggested, to my friends that is who have tiny kids! Or, I have heard to mix carnation instant breakfast in the morning milk. If you are not comfortable with the way your dr. is treating you though, by all means, trust your gut, and find a new one! Good luck ~A.~
