Seeking Dialogue with Other Mothers of Bipolar Children: Coping/misdiagnosed

I have an eleven year old daughter diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She counseled with a PhD (psychologist) for one year before deciding to try medication. We have not seen much change. She desperately wants friends, but lacks the social graces to keep any friends. She is the middle child: 9 & 11 year old brothers without any similar complications. I do not feel as though her middle school has been successful in accommodating her behavioral needs. For example, every episode is dealt with punitively. Has anyone out there faced any of these problems? Or can you offer any suggestions? I feel frustrated and feel the need to educate others as would any parent of a child with special needs.

What can I do next?

I have a 7 year old daughter with bipolar and sensory intregation disorder.

We just moved to Reno from CA and the quality of care we have received here is 1000 times better than CA> She has 2 therapy appts a week and she is FINALLY stable on meds (risperdal and guanfacine) We have her at a charter school who has been PHENOMENAL with her special needs. I have been my daughter's advocate since we started seeking help when she was 2, she got her dx at age 5.5. She has already had a psychiatric hospitalization.

If you would like to chat you can email me through this site and I will give you my phone number :)

Maybe she was diagnosed incorrectly- have someone else look at her because the medicine should be working.
New thoughts and advice may be helpful to you both.
My husband and my daughter both went into the same PHD(at different times) because they knew they had adult ADD. The psychologist told them they both had Bipolar Disorder which is so NOT true, they had to convince her they did not, she went ahead and gave them Adderall for ADD which has made a huge difference. I think Bipolar Disorder is getting over diagnosed in a big way. That would have been terrible if they both went on Bipolar medication like Lithium.
Get a second opinion.

Hi Dayna, I have a daughter that is now 10 and has been diagnosed since 5. She was acting different since birth though and I knew something was wrong by age 2. She's been to neurologist, psychiatrist since 3, but meds since just before kindergarten started. I knew she was not going to make it unless something helped her. She would start crying and wouldn't stop for hours. Any emotion would continue escalating and escalating. Everything bothered her, smells, touch, sounds, etc. which made one doc say it was asperger's, but it is also bipolar, the tantrums, the weird behavior, you name it, I've seen it. I have been bipolar type 2 since 16, and I'm now 32 so I am not so afraid of trying medications, I know the alternative of being off them or being on the wrong one, is not an option. The brain just doesn't work right. It's nothing to be ashamed of, or afraid of. Of course it's taken years to accept this but I'm like yea, I'm mental, so what. I take meds and deal with it. I know how alone you feel and pressured to make the right decisions for your baby. But my daughter had tried probably 10 medications and different combinations before she found the right one. Now she is doing so well. I have been through three psychiatrist and two counselors. I have been through 7 pediatricians before I found ones that wouldn't look at me like I was crazy when I was describing her symptoms. She has now been on the same meds for two years and it has been a long road to get there. I would love to tell you who her doctor is and anything else you might like to know. I really feel for you. I too have always wanted to share everything I've learned in this area, but I'm not a professional, and it's hard to find the right people to talk to. It is just too much to write all these years down here, but I would love to share what I've learned. If you need a friend or a listening ear. Email me at ____@____.com.

Dear Dayna,
Greetings!!!

I so understand how you are feeling. Have you ever thought about researching homeopathic and natural remedies instead of medicating your child? I know from experience that these meds do more harm than good!

I highly recommend contacting Dr. Anita Pepi who is truly an amazing Chiropractor and Nutritionist and would definitely be able to help your daughter naturally.

Here's her data:

2950 Los Feliz Blvd. Suite 101

I have a 10 year old daughter that is a diagnosed ADHD, but I have some suspition about her possibly being Bi-Polar. She has a terribe time in school and now has several friends but what what does is allows these friends to treat her badly....because she spent so long not having any. I have a terrible time dealing with her myself, one minute she is fine then all of a sudden you can look at her wrong and she is a total different person...her school is very helpful and she has her 504 accomodation, but it is soooo slow. She is just now about to be tested for learning disabilities when I requested testinn the first week of school....
I am so frustrated with her and have no idea what to do with her....
