Seeking Cedars or UCLA Doctor Consultation on VBAC for 7 Months Preggers Mom

HI Moms:

I really like my current OB doctor, but he recently told me that he would not be comfortable with me trying to have a VBAC with baby #2. Baby #2 consistently has been in the breech position, so I was fine with the idea of having a second c-section (Baby #1 was delivered as a c-section after 41 hrs of unmedicated labor, getting to 10 cm dilation, but then the baby not descending after about 5 hrs of pushing - he was respectful of my attempt to have a natural birth but we decided to operate when the baby's heart rate started declining).

So, at my last drs. appointment, Baby #2 finally turned around and is in the proper position. When I told my doctor that I wanted to try to have a VBAC given the baby's new position, he discouraged it because he doesn't think it's safe at the "level 2" community hospitals (ones without sufficient extra operating rooms and anesthesiologists) where he delivers (Good Sam & CA Hospital). He recommended that I look for doctors at "level 1" hospitals (like Cedars or UCLA) that are large enough to have that extra staffing if I wanted to pursue this option to make sure there was a safe back up plan. But I understand that most OB doctors won't take new preggers patients so close to their due date.

Does anyone know of pro VBAC drs at Cedars preferably (much closer to home) who might be willing to at least sit down with me for a consultation and talk through options and risks. I really respect my current dr, but know that he's very skeptical of VBACs so would really like to hear the other side of the argument from another doctor.

Thanks!

I agree -- Dr. Kline is excellent! If he's not able to take you on as a patient, I can send you a list of other wonderfully supportive doctors at Cedars. It's a long list, so I won't post it here, but you can email me and I'll send it to you.

If you email me at ____@____.com it will notify me right away and you'll bypass the spam filters on my primary email address ;-)

Happy Birthing!

All the best,

T.

I don't have a Dr. but maybe try bringing your doctor the latest research that VBAC is actually safer than a repeat C-section for both mom and baby. C's are major surgery and the complication rate is actually quite high. The AMA is now recommending VBAC unless there is an independent reason for a C-section, not just because one was done before.

Hi K.. My doctor based at Cedars in Hollywod area is Dr. David Kline. Hands down, I would recommend him (and have) to any woman looking for a good, compassionate, knowledgeable, experienced with natural births doctor. He works with my midwife (who was also treated by Dr. Kline) and he delivered my first baby at Cedars after being transferred from the Birth Center (36 hrs labor, 2 hrs pushing). Any other doctor would have pushed for C-section as my water had broken 24 hours earlier. But I had a vaginal birth and he was superb. I delivered my second baby at home (water birth) but I saw Dr. Kline for the tests that needed to be done. Give him a call and decide for yourself. His number is ###-###-####. His office is in Century City. Good luck!

Dr David Kline is wonderful. He was my "back-up" OB-GYN for my home birth, so I only saw him once during my pregnancy. I never thought I would want a male OB, but he was very respectful and sensitive.
