I have a 39 month old Toddler that is very social loving and active . Unfortunately his speech is coming along ever so slowly. This has presented obstacles getting him enrolled in Pre-K . The the teachers were under the impression that he doesn't understand them at all. So I had to take him out alltogether. I know that he does understand what I say. But he is struggling with communication. He gestures a lot with his hands, but does not want to budge expressing what he wants verbally. His Pediatrician advised me to check with the school district he is in . But since he is in no school district , where do I even begin to search for help ?
So my question is, where do I start looking in order to get him evaluated and enrolled in speech therapy. I am looking for a patient therapist that gives him one on one time .

What can I do next?

You are in a school district. The district you live in is the one you belong to. You pay taxes to them- you qualify for their services.

My son was also speech-delayed. Understood everything you told him, just couldn't talk. Go to the elem. school that he belongs to and tell them you want him tested for speech. (I can't believe they didn't do this to begin w/in Pre-K) They will then determine what type of help he qualifies for and place him appropriately.

If you request testing they HAVE to do it. There is a timeline and if they don't do it within a certain amount of time they are out of compliance. Everything is free.

Good Luck!

Get in touch with the school your son would go to when he starts kindergarten. Have the speech department evaluate him. It is all free and he will go up to the school a few days a week for speech. My daughter was tested and went 2 times a week. The good thing was when she started kinder this year she was very comfortable with the school and the teachers already knew her.
Hope this helps!

Hello Manuela,

I have a son that did not start speaking until he was 2 years old. At the time I was referred to ECI Brighton School. After he turned 3 I had to call our local school and have him evaluated through the school and now he gets speech therapy. what you need to do is call the local school where you live and ask to speak with the speech therapist and have him evaluated so he can get speech therapy. It does not matter if he is in school yet they can help him. If you have any questions please let me know.

The school district would be the school district that you live in. If you live in North Central, try NEISD. Call them and give them your address and they will tell you what school district you are in. I think the pediatrician must refer you, but he or she should give you more information and help. Call your pediatrician and ask for more answers or find a new one.

Hi Manuela. My son his 21 months and has been is speech therapy for a while now. I noticed that one of the other moms advised ECI. They are a really good program, (we are currently using them) but they only do therapy for children to age 3. There is an out patient rehab clinic that we have also used, Methodist Outpatient Rehab, ph. # ###-###-####, and they have a speech therapist there as well, she is really good. You may want to call ECI anyway, even though your child is outside of their age range. They may be able to give you some other resources, the # for the one here is ###-###-####. Good luck and hope this helps.

April Smith, Greater Learning - has got to be the best around. She and her group are incredible, trustworthy, and honest. Manuela, don't waste your time or your money. First, call Easter Seals, ask them to see your son for evaluation for services - any speech delay is usually covered under Early Childhood Intervention, and it is free. If you have insurance, check to see if Greater Learning is one of their providers. Get in the ECI system NOW, they will see your son at home, at day care, whereever necessary. And, when he is 4, he would be moved into an early childhood development program in the schooldistrict, and kept involved and speech therapy provided. Don't wait, time is money and cannot be bought back for your son. There are children who will resist talking until 5 or later, Thomas Sowell, an noted author who is at Stanford University is an example, and so is his son, and he turned out just fine. There are other instances where the speech is delayed for other reasons - whatever the case, get it addressed now, so you can have some peace of mind and your son some useful methods of communication. Good luck, don't take no for an answer from any one, and keep going.

You might try contacting ECI (Early Childhood Intervention). You can find out more through http://www.dars.state.tx.us/ecis/index.shtml or 1-800-628-5115.
It can either be covered by your insurance or free, all depending on what you qualify for. I know a few people who have used them and loved whoever came out and had success. It wouldn't hurt to have him evalutated! I wish you the best with your little boy.

Even though he's not in school yet you live in a school district. Find out which school he would be going to IF he were old enough and call them. They will test him and, if he qualifies, give him free speech services to help get him to where he needs to be. My son went and they were great. It was one on one. ECI will refer you to the school since he is already three. It usually speeds things up if you call the school directly and ask for the speech therapist.
