Seeking Advice on Kidney Reflux and Treatment

My daughter, 14 months old, has stage three reflux in both her kidneys. We have an appointment with a Pediatric Urologist on Friday. Looks like our two choices of treatment are antibotics until she outgrows the reflux or a procedure called Deflux. Has anyone had any experience with any of this? Thank you in advance for sharing.

My son was born with issues regarding his bladder which in turn has enlarged his kidneys to a slight degree. We do not have the reflux (thank goodness !). But my son was on antiobiotics the 1st year of his life to prevent infections. I had no issues with doing that. I have had friends with kids with kidney reflux that have had the Deflux done. It worked great for them and they had no problems with the procedure. I would sit down with all your questions with your pedi urologist and have them explain everything. It tends to be alot scarier and more worrisome until you get all your answers and information.

When I was a baby I had the same problem. After many high fevers and always being sick, they found out I was having reflex because I was born without the flaps that your urine goes through so it was refluxing into my kidneys. After that I always had UTI's when I was growing up and constantly on antibiotics. I almost had to have another surgery when I was two but didn't. Then as I got older and when I was 21 I had reflux again in my right kidney and infections again. They had to go in then and replace my right ureter. I have never heard the term deflux but I am famiiar with all of this. It may be better for her to have a procedure done now so she doesn't suffer from frequent infections as she gets older. Good luck.

Hey J.! We did the course of anitbiotics for our daughter. I am not familiar with Deflux, it was not something that was even presented to us. Grace was diagnosed with reflux disease @ about the same age as your daughter. However, just her right kidney was affected with Stage 1 reflux. We had a repeat VCUG done about 18 months later and she had already outgrown it. She got through the process without any difficulty. I was a bit concerned about the daily antibiotics for so long, but it was a low dose. Seems like she may have gotten 1-2 UTIs while on the treatment and they just gave her a regular dosage amount of the antibiotics for a week or so and then back down to the low dose.

Hope this helps! If you have any more specific questions that maybe I can answer, please let me know. My heart goes out to you guys!!

I had reflux when i was little and had surgery at age six to correct and never had a problem since and i am 38. My daughter was diagnosed at just under 3 months with reflux on both sides but they never gave me a stage with her diagnoses. She was on antibiotic utnil age four when a dr. suggested surgery to correct. She was 3 months away from her yearly scan which showed if it was correcting itself so we decided to wait until after that (which isn't a picnic either but better than surgery). They gave her a mild drug that made her loopy and relaxed and thank God she had outgrown the reflux during that last year. She never had a problem on the antibiotic, never had a kidney or bladder infection, and i wasn't thrilled about her taking it for 4 years but i'm glad i didn't rush into surgery either. She is 10 years old and doing great with no problems. Maybe you should try the antibiotic at least for a while and see how it goes. If she is doing fine on it then wait a while and re-evaluate each year as she gets a little older. Hopefully she will out grow it also. Good Luck!
