Seeking Advice on Hives

I was wondering if anyone has had the same problem or can give me advice on what to do. I have been waking up on the middle of the night with hives. Sometimes they are bad but other times not. I have had this problem before once before I was pregnant with my second child and when I was pregnant with her. Nothing has changed as far as eating, soaps, and etc. The only that has changed this week is I started a new BC pill. But like I said before I had the same problem when I was pregnant and not on the pill. It is very irritating to wake up itching all over. Can anyone please give me some advice.

What can I do next?

My four year old daughter has chronic hives. She has been allergy tested and we have not been able to find a cause. However, hives can be a symptom of autoimmune issues so we have to have an antibody test every 6 months. You should call your doctor and at least let them know. My daughters doctor told us that some people are just "hivers" and will get them throughout their lives from different things. Heat, cold, stress, or nothing you can pinpoint. For those hives they just treat the breakouts with benadryl.

not sure what could be causing it, but weirder that its happened before...it could be the BC pill or somethiing in it that you were exposed to the first time...who knows, there are soooo many chemicals in everything nowadays. i can give you some suggestions to help relieve the itching, you can try some over the counter benadryl or cortaid cream. I wish they still made caladryl, you might be able to find it at some of the mom and pop drugstores out there like sally's in edmond off 2nd. good luck.

Funny you should say this because I have had the same problem since the 27th of February. Nothing new that I can think of and--i sure better not be preggo with all the BC we use--Of, course, I periodically break out or start itching for no apparent reason.

I was told to take benadryl around the clock until the hives had been gone for 48 hours, at that point stop taking the benadryl and see if they come back, if they do they want to do alergy tests.

Casei,You could be allergic to something in the hormone makeup of the birth control. You need to get with your ob doc and let him know about this. Anytime you are having hives like you are, they could become life threatning in some circumstances. Please do not wait to get with your doctor.

Are you getting cold at night? I know this sounds crazy, but people can actually be allergic to cold. I am! It's called cold urticaria (cold hives). If I don't take my Zyrtec, I will wake up with hives, or I will go to work and start itching.

This may not be your problem, since you have some other factors that the other ladies mentioned, but this is a possibility. Try getting yourself warm & see if it relieves the itching.

If you have any more questions about cold urticaria, send me a message.

I wish I knew the answer to this! I am currently COVERED head to toe in hives. I went to the doctor today and he said it's an allergic reaction to penicillin that I was prescribed. And since I'm pregnant I might have this crazy rash for a couple weeks because I can't take the normal meds to clear it up right away! Ahhh Good Luck!

Hi C.,

You said it's a NEW BC pill - also you're a police officer. Has the stress level gone up? You wouldn't believe all the things stress can cause! 4 yo and 9 mo old - are you even getting enough sleep?
