I need to know if anyone has any advice regarding VBAC's. I have a 2 year old son and his birth ended in a c-section after 24+ hours of very easy labor because he had a prolapsed cord. I was very disappointed about the c-section but very greatful that my son was alive and healthy. i'm just trying to weigh my options. If you have had experience with VBAC's do you know any doctor's in the tampa/brandon area that will perform them.
Hi Robin, I am a nurse in the area and work at St. Joes I know that none of the drs that deliver there offer vbacs...I had 2 csections and would have loved to attempt a vbac in january when my youngest was born....but to my knowledge drs have pretty much stopped offering them

I just attempted a VBAC in July. Unfortunately, it ended in another c-section for the same reason as my first child 3 years ago. I stopped both times at 6 CM's and the both of my kids were turned face up. My uterus got to a point where it wouldn't stop contracting so they got worried and went ahead and did another c-section. I called every single doctor on my health plan, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and I did come across one group that will allow you to at least attempt to have a VBAC, USF Physicians Group on Davis Island. They are located right next to Tampa General and that is the only hospital where they have admitting priviledges. So I live in Riverview but I wanted to at least try for a VBAC so I decided to take the chance and drive to Tampa General to deliver.
They are a great group of doctors, nurses and mid-wives. They consist of mostly women. I think there are some male doctors in the high-risk department but for the most part they are all women. Their phone number is ###-###-####.
Dear Robin- Congrats on your pregnancy and desire for a VBAC. I know as of last year The Women's Group in Tampa delivering at SJW and UCH were offering VBACs, but I don't know if that still holds true. Check also with Labor of Love Birth Center in Lutz, 813/949-1185 http://laborluv.com for an out of hospital option. Also check out www.ican.org for helpful info on C/S and VBACs along with local support groups. Know your rights and responsibilities. I think you will have a difficult time finding a physician in the area who will do a VBAC. Unfortunately, due to liability issues and the recommendation from ACOG that they not be done, I don't know of any in the area who are allowing their patients to VBAC. I know of someone recently who searched the whole Tampa area and couldn't find anyone so she opted for a home birth with a midwife. She ended up panicking at the last minute and tried to drive to the hospital and delivered in her car. She and the baby did well, but not a great experience. This is drastic, yes, but it is reality at this time. Things have a way of going in cycles, but I don't see VBACs happening in the near future. The recommendation is that your physician is in the hospital for your entire labor in case of problems, and quite frankly, that isn't practical for them. The C/S rate has nearly doubled in the past couple of years -- and with all of the "stars" having C/S for their births, it seems to be quite in vogue now. Quite a few women are opting out of labor all together and just asking for C/S for their delivery.
