Renal Ultrasound

My son has had a few of these done. It's very easy. It's just like when you were pregnant and the doctor did an ultrasound for you... they put jelly on the child's tummy and sides and take a look with the ultrasound device. It's very short and easy! The only issue I had was my son didn't want to stay still while the radiologist was doing the ultrasound.

its no big deal, painless and non invasive. its very important to follow through after a uti especially inlittle girls. im asuming he is odereing the ultrasound to make sure there are no abnormalities in her anatomy that could be causing the uti's. i started having kidney stones 5 yrs ago. it is the most painfull thing ever, kind oflike labor but with no rest in between the contractions and sometimes it goes on for days on end. eventually i was diagnosed with poly cystic kidney disease. i have have had so many ultrasounds i can even count them. if i had had one form the very begining i woudl have found out sooner. i would go ahead and do it but if it makes you comfortable ask him why he is ordering it. someitmes infections can cause other damage in the urinary organs so jsut ot make sure ask. he sounds like a pretty thorough dr . most of them dont even think of that especially with kids

I myself have had a renal ultrasound: totally no big deal. Nothing scary or painful. You may want to bring things to keep her lying as still as possible for the whole thing (does she like to have books read to her? Or bring a cuddle-toy, whatever works for her.)

My son had to have a renal ultrasound when he was about 12 years old and kept having excessive protein showing up in his urine at sports physicals. The ultrasound wasn't painful or traumatic so your child won't suffer through the procedure. The ultrasound test showed no deformities and even the tech taking the test said he looked good (unofficially) then the doc confirmed. I've never heard of that and I have two daughters who have both gotten UTIs!
Dont do it, I think they just want more money.-I mean if she were ALWAYS getting them and complaing of pain in her tummy and back-that would be another story
Just dont do soap in baths. HAve her stand up to wash her hair after the water is all let out. drink lots of cranberry juice (not cranberry cocktail)
mixed with a better tasting juice.
Look for preventative measures so you dont have to face this again.

The kids haven't had them but I have as I'm a renal patient. Get it done. Like others said, a little warm gel on the belly and it's over in a few minutes. If you're not getting it done at your ped's office be sure to ask them to offer choices of imaging labs that are kid friendly (some are better at these things for kids than others).

Hi, my daughter has had problems for a long time. They did not find the problem until she was 8 yrs old. The valve in her bladder does not function properly and has caused uti's, bladder infections and kidney infections. Her Pediatrician did not catch this until she was 8, I had to get angry and pushing for testing to be done. So let your Doctor due the testing so you daughter does not have to be sick for years. My daughter was diagnosed with having Vesicoureteral reflux (VUR)and with antibiotics treatment and diet that her Urologist put her on has keep her uti down to once a year. She is a beatiful, active 9 yr old now.

My son has had several renal ultrasounds, with his first one at 2 weeks of age. They are noninvasive and depending on how detailed the doctor requests, can tell a lot. My son lost his kidney in utero and we've had renal ultrasounds on his existing kidney for years. The kidney is measured and, I imagine with two kidneys would be compared. My child never needed any type of anesthesia or medication, nor was it even brought up by the doctor. I'm wondering why the doctor is requesting one for a UTI? Has she had multiple UTI? Was this UTI really bad to where the kidney may be damaged? Was her blood work/urine sample suspect of decreased kidney function? I'm sure all will go well as the renal ultrasound is no big deal. My 2 yr old daughter just had a renal ultrasound last month. Not at all painful, just like the ultrasounds you had when pregnant. I noticed in one of the other responses that the Mama talked about a valve in the urinary system not functioning properly. This will not show up in an ultrasound. If there is a valve problem you need a procedure called a VCUG (voiding cystourethrogram)which is an x-ray procedure where a contrast fluid is injected via catheter into the bladder and then peed out while x-ray pictures are being taken. This procedure is mildly uncomfortable just because of the pressure on the full bladder, but once the baby pees the pressure is gone and all is well. This procedure checks urinary system function, an ultrasound can only see if there is a problem with the shape or size of the anatomy, not if it is functioning properly. I would ask your doctor if you should do both of these procedures, or why he want to only do the ultrasound.
As far as cost goes, I just got my bill from UNM total cost for both of the above procedures, $1248! Check with your insurance to see how much they will cover. My daughter had this done because she has recurrent UTIs, she even got one while on antibiotics for another one. If your daughter has only had one you may want to hold off as another mama suggested.
