Rash on Chin - Seattle,WA

Hello. My five year old son has a rash on his chin. I'm pretty sure it's from sucking on his blanket. The wet blanket rests on his face and causes the rash. I'm doing my best to get him to stop sucking on the blanket but I think that will take some time. I've tried vitamin e and calendula. Niether seem to help. Any ideas? Thanks.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hello, I bought the bag balm and have been putting it on several times a day. The rash is much better but that probably also has to do with taking away his blankie. That was... difficult but he quickly adapted. A week later he asked for it again and I gave it to him at night. I went into his room later and removed it from his mouth. Next day the rash was back. So again, the blankie has been taken away. He understands and is being a very good sport about it. Hopefully we're done with the blankie. Fingers crossed

It almost certainly is from the blanket. Maybe just take the blanket and give him something else to suck on that won't stay so wet? Other than that, just try to keep it dry as obvious as that sounds! :)

I would take the blanket away from the 5 year old...he doesn't need to be sucking on anything any longer.

**You should get him (and you) "Owen" by Kevin Henkes.
It's a story about a mouse(boy) and his yellow blanket that he loves.** It's also a very age appropriate book for a five year old. It would be perfect! Borders has it, Amazon should too.

My daughter sucks her fingers and had a rash on her chin as well. On the advise of her
doctor, we put Cetaphil cream on the rash and then covered it with vasaline to lock in the moisture. It worked great and continues to. The rash went away, and when we have occational flareups, we do the same thing and it goes away in a day or two.

Good luck.

J.,

My son did the same thing. I took care of the rash with a small amount of Desitin. I had 6 blankets and once a week I put them through the laundry with bleach, made sure he had a clean one when he got up in the morning, then after breakfast it went away until bed time.

Just some heads up. My dentist noticed that he was pushing his teeth forward and suggested that we reduce his time with the blanket. I took it from him in September cold turkey and after 2 or 3 nights he was able to get to sleep without too much fussing.

My youngest two constantly lick their lips and get red rashes surrounding their mouths. For years we've used Aquaphor (by Eucerin) also mentioned in an earlier response. It's like really good petroleum jelly. We use it 3 or 4 times a day, and before bed every night. I've used a bit of balmex if it's really bad, but if we keep the Aquaphor on it even when it looks okay- it keeps the rash away. If it does not clear up, get to the doctor because it can become an infection and you'll need an antibiotic cream. That's happened to us before too. So we keep Aquaphor in every room, every car, purse, back-pack and use it as much as you can.

sounds like his chin is chapped... i would try chapstick or burn cream. both of those moisturize and protect the skin. my grandmother used to put burn cream and bag balm on everything, they work really well.

I had this issue with my son for a some time. Something that helps is to use Lansinoh Lanolin. I love it cause it's pure lanolin and doesn't hurt the child. If they use it for breastfeeding babies, it can't hurt to try for this. I used it to protect the skin from his saliva. Also works great for putting on cheeks, nose, and lips during the winter. Works for burns on hands (if you don't want to use something that could hurt him if he puts his hands in his mouth.

My son sucks and chews his lower lip and gives himself rashes. I put lanolin on it (it's safe to eat), and it usually clears up in a day or two. I always make sure to put a good coating on at night, when he won't be chewing it off for a while.

My rash balm of choice is Aquafor! I use it on my kids faces for all kinds of rash and love that, unlike many other balms and creams, it is colorless and odorless, and not too sticky, which can be annoying to kids. I also use it on diaper rash - love it way more than any other diaper cream or balm I've tried, and I've tried them all. It both heals and protects. I keep two big tubs of it around, one labeled "face" and the other labeled "butt" :-) I would smear a good amount on his chin each night before bed, I'd be surprised if it didn't clear it up in a night or two.

Hi J.,
Bag Balm... the jelly in the green tin with the cow on it.
That stuff works wonders on all kinds of rashes or dry skin!
You can use it durning the day to help heal and at night time to act as a barrier for his skin!
The other thing that should work is Lanolin. You probably used it if you breast fed your son! I still have some from when my girls were babies and I use it for really dry skin or chapped lips!
Good luck... bed time habbits are the worst to break!
MJ
