Rash, Eczema?? - Kansas City,KS

My 7 week old has had a rash for the past week or so. At first I thought it was the same thing my daughter had when she was an infant.....very sensitive skin and any time she rubbed up against something not laundered in baby detergent, it was red and bumpy but went away. My son's rash is all over his face and neck now, and some on his chest, and around his ears it is starting to get crusty. Could this be more than just the typical rash? What works for it?

What can I do next?

Could be a milk allergy (not lactose intolerance, totally different). My 1st born son was diagnosed with a milk allergy and exhibited the same symptoms.

You did not mention what type of detergent you are using (baby could be sensitive to the chemicals) or if you are breastfeeding or using formula. To get rid of the bumps my pediatrician suggested i use 1% cortisone cream. Use sparingly and as needed. Also avoid milk products - if you are bf, you'll have to avoid the milk products as well. Avoid anything that says whey, casin...avoid!

I have a 7 week old that had that exact same thing 2 weeks ago. Started on her cheeks, then was all over her head and her ears and her ears got crusty too and red. Then it went down the top of her neck and back and was around her eyes-it freaked me out so I took her to the dr and was told it was cradle cap on her face, baby eczema. Here were her dr's instructions: only wash her face when necessary, don't bathe more than 2-3 times a week, and to put .5% hydrocortisone cream on the really red patches no more than twice a day for no more than one week and then put Aquaphor on the rest of the spots. I wasn't crazy about using hydrocortisone, but after 2 days of using the hydrocortisone and aquaphor it started going away. It's flared up here and there since, but now I just put aquaphor on it and gets better again. The dr told me she could have it for a few weeks or months. Hope that helps!

My son had what you are describing at about the same age. It started as the ususal "baby acne" little spots on the face but then continued to spread and got crusty etc. The Dr. said it was something like Seboric Dermititis and she eventually prescribed us an ointment to put on it as well as an antibiotic. The little rash and crusty parts were red and she was worried about infection. This did the trick so please take him in to the Dr. and have it checked out. You don't want him to get infection.

It is probably due to a food or contact allergy. Are you breastfeeding or formula feeding? If bfing, start by eliminating dairy from your diet. Within 5-7 days you should see a big improvement, but the bad news is you will have to avoid dairy the entire time you bf. He will need to avoid dairy as an older child, too, but most kids outgrow dairy allergies by 2 years old. If formula feeding, switch to soy. Again, should notice big improvement in 5-7 days. If it's not dairy, other likely culprits are eggs, soy, peanuts, and maybe even wheat. If soy formula does not work, he may have to have a hypoallergenic one. In the meantime, take him to the ped to be sure the rash is not super infected since it is crusty. They may want him on antibiotics, but you should push for a referral to the ped dermatologist. This happened to my youngest, and he is officially allergic to dairy and peanuts. Ugh!

Don't know if it is the same but it sounds like the rash my baby had. Can't remember the technical name but "prickly heat" is the name I remember. Basically it is heat rash. It forms only on the head, face, and upper torso. Google baby rashes and there will be a pic. I used Aquaphor for babies and it was gone within a week. If it is a heat rash, remember not to dress him so warm. We were cooking our little one!

Good luck!

My daughter had the same thing and I kept thinking it was just baby acne or sensitive skin and figured it would go away. But it ended up being excema. And her excema was being caused by a milk allergy. That may not be the case for you because your baby would have other issues too. My doctor gave a perscription for some excema medicine but the pharmacist mixes it with cetaphil lotion so it's gentle enough to put on her face every day. Not all pharmacy's can do it so you may have to ask around but since we got that it's helped alot. They can also mix it with Aquaphor. Good Luck!

I would just call the doc. It could be anything. The laundry soap, one day I wore a new shirt I hadnt washed yet (gross I know) and forgot and held my son and he got a rash on his face. Or it could be some kind of illness. My daughter has excema, and I wouldnt describe it as crusty. When she first had it at age 2, I mistaked it for poison ivy. I would call since hes so young. =)

It sounds like it might be cradle cap. My son had it too - his whole upper body was covered. You should probably take him into the ped. They will tell you exactly what it is and how to get rid of it. I wouldn't treat such a little one with OTC remedies w/out a DR's instructions first.

My daughter has really bad eczema and I would never describe it as crusty. I would take your little one into the Dr, it could be Impetigo

I would contact your doctor. It sounds like an allergic reaction to something he's eaten or drank or been around. It could be a form of acsema also. Talk to your doc and see what they say. Good luck and God Bless.

My nephew got something like this and it was all over his body. The doctor told my sister that some of it was just the new baby rash that a lot of kids get, but some of it was a yeast infection. They gave her a cream to put on him and it cleared it up, or ask the pharmacist and they may recommend using an athlete's foot cream. I know the athlete's foot cream works wonders on bad diaper rash.

I would call the dr. There are so many different things it could be. It could be a reaction to something or it could be eczema but from what I know of eczema it does not look crusty. My daughters eczema looked just about like ring worm when she breaks out. I do not know if I would put anything on it at 7 weeks. Do you wash your clothes in baby detergent? The reason why I ask is that could he have rubbed his face on one of your shirts and that might have caused his rash. However there is a lot of stuff going around right now and there is some stuff that cause a rash. With a 7 week old I would call the dr. but that is just me.

N.? Have you taken him to the doctor? My daughter had a yeast infection that started on her chin and then continually got worse. Little red bumps all over. I'd get him to the doctor asap because he has got to be so uncomfortable whatever it is. FYI with my daughters yeast infection, after I tried OTC antifungal I took her to the pediatrician and they gave her the standard topical Nystatin cream which made it worse for her; turns out she's allergic to it and they ended up curing it with an oral dose of Diflucan(sp?). Hope this helps!

It sounds a lot like my son's eczema, but what the doctors consider a mild form, which is what my son has. His pediatrician prescribed him Triamcinolone Acetonide cream, which is a basically a medicated form of petroleum jelly. I am careful to make sure that I only use the Johnson's Moisture Care baby wash with the lotion in the wash already and I also put the prescription on him as soon as he gets out of the tub and as he needs it the rest of the time. One other thing I want to mention though, my son also has allergies to proteins and sugars in cow's milk, and this will set his eczema off faster than any detergents or lotions. You may want to consider an allergy test if your insurance will cover it. I hope this helps.

That sounds similar to what my 5 month old twins have. We've been putting Aquaphor on it several times a day and that really helped. It was on their foreheads, cheeks, and ears, and was a little crusty on their ears. It seemed to be itchy, too, as they would rub and scratch their foreheads. As long as we are consistent with the Aquaphor, we're keeping it pretty much under control.
