Hi. My daughter is 11 weeks old. For the past couple of weeks she has had a cough. I am planning on calling the doctor Monday. She can get in these coughing spells that sound really bad. Sometimes she has congestion which we try and get out with saline drops/nose suction. Anyways - today she hasn't been eating great. She has been eating 6 oz every time and today the past 3 feedings she's ate 3 oz, 3 1/2 oz, 1/2 oz. The last feeding here she just fought the entire time and I think I was lucky to get 1/2 oz in her. Any suggestions on what could be wrong? Should I call doctor tonight?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Sure I'd love some nutritional ideas for future reference :)

We called the after hours doc & they said as long as things dont get worse it can wait until Monday. We took her in yesterday & the doctor said she either has had/still has a bug and congestion can cause all of her symptoms - including eating less. He gave her some meds for it & said if she isn't better by Friday his second guess would be acid reflux & will call her in something for it then but he's leaning towards a bug with congestion.

I'm not one to run to the doctor about everything, but an 11-week-old baby who has had a cough for a couple of weeks and is eating less and less needs to get to the doctor, pronto. If she gets dehydrated, she could get much sicker very fast. I have some nutritional ideas I could share that could very likely help with her cough and congestion, but for a baby this young, I think you need to get the doctor's input before trying anything else.

At only 11 weeks old refusing to eat is a serious thing. Yes, call right away!

Either take her to the doctor or the ER. An 11 week old who is not eating can get dehydrated quickly. How wet are her diapers? When the baby is dehydrated the diapers are much drier than normal. If she turns blue with coughing take her to the ER immediately. Hope your little one gets well soon.

I know other mommies have already said this, but I reiterate. Call the pedi as not eating at her age = dehydration VERY quickly. They can dehydrate in less than 24 hours if it is really bad. Does she have fever? Is this coughing super strained and such that she is sucking her lungs in with each cough (could be whooping cough)? Is it raspy and gravely, especially at night (maybe croup)? If you see her struggling to breathe when she is coughing or see her ribs sucking in, time to take a trip to the ER no matter what.

She can get dehydrated quickly so I'd take her to the ER or after hours emergency pediatric clinic. It could be asthma, whopping cough, croup, or pneumonia or something else. Good luck, hope she's better soon.

You need to call your doctor and I would not let an 11 week old go for 2 weeks with a cough without see a doctor. She could have an infection, croup ect. You need to find out what the problem is. Now that she is not eating is a concern. They will probably tell you to go to the ER if you call at night or on the weekend.
Good luck.

Yes, call the doctor. It is easy for little ones to become dehydrated. You don't go into pediatrics expecting to sleep through the night when you're on call.

She could have an ear infection, she could just feel lousy, but you do want to know how much she has to take in before she's at risk of being dehydrated.

Good luck! Hope she's better soon.
