Private Insurance?

My good friend is getting ready to age out of her parent's health insurance. She works for a nonprofit as an independent contractor and no insurance is offered. She is unmarried and makes very little money, so this is going to be tricky. If any of you have been in this or a similar situation and could give me some advice to pass on, I'd really appreciate it!

A friend of mine who lives in Round Rock uses Scott & White HMO plan (Scott & White hospitals). I don't have more info, but she told me it was $125/month. She said she has been very happy with her plan and the services she receives. Her husband is self-employed and I know they have little income.

Hi C.,
Bless you- you are truly doing great work. My single daughter gets her insurance thru Amica- it has been a great thing for her and offers lots of plans very cheaply.
Good luck and blessings

I'd go with more of a catistrophic insurance. Since she's young is she healthy? You can do a $5,000 deductable and then they pay 100%. Blue cross/blue shield has a policy like that and our family of 4 pays only $500 a month (my husbands 60 and I'm 50, kids are 17 and 14) so it's very affordable, but we don't run to the doctor and we're all very healthy. it's even got drug coverage, but it's not very good, but it does pay a portion. Any independant agent who sells a variety should be able to see what her needs are with just a few questions. If she's near The Woodlands, I've got a great agent.

My husband is a construction contractor and we have to buy our own insurance independently. We have insurance with Unicare and pay $500 a month for a family of 4. Not bad!! It has unlimited office visits with $30 copays and generic meds are $10. Brand name meds are $50 after $500 deductible and brand formulary are $30 after deductible but generic no deductible. We almost always only need generic meds. The Medical deductible is 3000 but you there are several plans to choose from. Try calling 1-888-529-3451 or look up online or if you live in Grayson County I can give you the information for an agent in Gainesville..good luck!!

If this person has a disability and under her parents health insurance there is a form which the HR could provide which is an Application for Incapacitated Dependents Coverage.
I believe those with a a high IQ/cognitive level this still applies and are still able to work.

There is also the option of applying for SSI and once a medical physician fills out the requested information to identify the disability and once approved, person will automatically qualified for Medicaid.

Since you assist individuals with unique and challenging abilities. Highly recommend that you also plan on attending any future 1 day workshop out in Austin on
Accessing Social Security Disability Benefits to Provide Opportunities for Self-Support for People with Disabilities.
There will also be a Texas Parent to Parent conference soon in June, out in Austin.
Mr. Daniel Scarborough who gives these classes may be out there as one of the speakers. Which is another option to attend as it might be a little less this route with a variety of sessions when it involves varies resource information to assist many individuals with disabilities.

Check out the 5th Annual Parent conference, it is open to all.

Check out the future dates on this workshops at this site:

Hope something helps, good luck on your search.
May someone else share some resource information your way as many who you assist with disabilities are Blessed to have someone in their lives to assist such as employments.

If she is not a person who has any chronic health issues she can always opt for major medical coverage only. I lived out of the country for several years and when I came back I went to school for awhile so I had no insurance through a company. I honestly don't remember what it cost, but it was just one payment for an entire year. I think I went through united insurance, but she can just look online if she wants to check into it. I was covered if had needed an ambulance or hospital care but I didn't have coverage for doctor visits, those were out of pocket, but I think I only had to go like one time in two years. I was unmarried at the time and healthy so I rarely had to go to the doctor and I preferred to save money. Hope it all works out for her:)

Hi there C.. I am an independent Health & Life insurance agent. Since she is so young and hopefully with no medical problems, her insurance policy shouldn't be too awfully expensive. She can go with a higher deductible and save on her monthly premium. I would be happy to do a quote for her with absolutely no obligation. She can reach me at ###-###-####. Best of Luck!

My husband is self employed so obviously we have to pay for private health insurance. We LOVE Scott and White. They have several plans so she can find something to meet her budget. I love their doctors and had our second child at their hospital in RR. It was much better than our experince with corporate insurance when we had our first. The rates are on the web.

Remind her to deduct the amount from her taxes each year, i don't remember the percentage of reimbursment but it is quite a deduction for us.

In my experience, Blue Cross tends to be the most expensive, but they are also the best (everyone takes them, they're fairly honest, etc.). Stay away from United Health Care!!!! They forced me to pay my $2000 premium twice in one year, I had doctors' bills which should have been paid by the insurance company, since I had already paid my deductible. However, UHC kept insisting that they didn't receive any payment information from my doctor (which isn't true -- my doctor sent it three times), and my credit was going to be ruined if I refused to pay the bills for which UHC was actually responsible. I spent a year wrangling with them, but, in the end, I ended up paying the extra $2000. From what I've heard, this is a pretty common practice of theirs.
Also, no matter which company she chooses, she needs to be aware that insurance companies in Texas DO NOT OFFER MATERNITY COVERAGE FOR INDIVIDUAL PLANS!!!! I found this out when I had Blue Cross. I asked the BC rep, "So you're telling me that anyone who carries individual insurance doesn't have maternity coverage?!?!" and she just said "Yep." According to my broker, Texas doesn't require insurance companies to offer maternity, and, since it's very expensive (for the company) and it usually gets used regularly, companies don't offer it. The only way to get coverage is to buy special maternity insurance (which can be more expensive than paying out-of-pocket), or try to get into a group plan (offered by employers of larger companies). Although she may not be thinking about babies right now, you never know what the future holds, and, considering that my son's c-section cost over $20,000, I'd be careful not to take the risk.

Stay away from United American. That's the worst decision I've ever made in my life.

Outside of that, just tell her to start counseling now because it's maddening.

Good luck!

I have to disagree with the earlier post about Blue Cross being the most expensive. I am an independent life and health insurance agent and in our area (Orange/Beaumont), the BCBS Select Choice plan is almost always less expensive than any others that I write through. She can absolutely contact me at ###-###-#### and I'll run quotes with several carriers for her.
