I'm getting ready to sell/donate most of my kids clothes, but I want to save some of my favorite outfits from each of the 4 girls so I can pass them on when they start to have their own families. That will be a LONG time from now since my kids are still infants & toddlers. What is the best way to pack them so they stay in good shape? They will be stored in my attic. What kind of container do I use? Do I need do treat them somehow? I don't want to pay a cleaner like I did when I stored my wedding gown. Thanks for the help!
My mother always said to wrap white clothing in blue tissue paper to stop them from going yellow. She sent over my old baby blankets for my newborn and they are still white after 30 years!
If you want to make sure it doesn't yellow, you can go to the dry cleaner and have it preserved like you would a wedding dress. I am sure they would do it. I would make sure I had enough pieces to make it worth the money though, as it usually is pricey to preserve wedding dresses.
I am not really sure that you have to do anything but make sure that it is clean, pressed and dry. I have been putting my baby's outfits in a clothing boxes wrapped in tissue paper. I did this with important outfits like her "coming home" outfit, baptism, and I even saved the ones she has worn on her milestone pictures during her first year. I have been including the professional picture in the box so that she can have it when she is older. My mom never saved anything of mine and I wish she had. Good luck.
Hi D.. My Mother kept my first Christmas dress (that my Grandmother created for me) so that my own daughter could wear it. Needless to say, my Mother did nothing special to preserve it for me -- I think it actually was hanging in closets for all these years (30-something years!!) It was made from red velvet and had white lace around the bib/neck area -- and the white lace did yellow. All in all, not too bad. So if you end up doing nothing other than putting it in a box, you can expect some yellowing of the lighter colors.
After my daughter wore it, I decided to have it preserved at the dry cleaners, in case she would like her daughter to wear it some day. I don't think the charge was as expensive as doing a wedding dress -- I think I spent $35 or so on it. (I haven't preserved my wedding dress, so I don't know what that costs!) I hope this info helps in some way.

I once heard that if lothes are packed in black garbage bags that they will keep better because it blocks out any light that over time may be damaging to thr garments. Good luck !!!!

Before responding I wanted to go and make sure it has worked all these years! lol My sons homemade tuxedo for his Christening from 19 years ago is still bright white with his baby blue thingy that goes around the waist! It looks like he wore it yesterday! Ahhhhhhhh if he could only still be that small! hee hee
All we did was put it in a white shirt box with a lot of white tissue paper. Nothing more at all. Was nice and easy and I have had it sitting in a basement for about 10 years and then in a closet on the shelf for the last 9. I also found a few of his/my fav baby outfits and shoes that still look great in a larger cardboard storage box that was also wrapped in white tissue paper. Those look just as good as the tux except for a formula stain on one of them:)

I have heard that wrapping the clothes in a clean white (or even just a light colored) sheet preserves clothes fairly well. I might then put them in a rubbermaid container or maybe one of those giant ziploc bags for storing bigger items.

So far I have used Space bags and they seem to be working well. I liked the medium best because it is not too big to store somewhere. The Jumbo does not stay flat very well so I would steer away from that size.
I would suggest using space bags.
