Preemie with NEC or Intestinal Problems

I have a 24 week old preemie that was born at 25 weeks. She is still in NICU largely because of gut issues. When she was 3 weeks old she became very sick and doctors thought she had NEC (hole in intestine) but it did not show up on xrays, she only had swollen belly. They were unable to operate until after she recovered from the infection she had. Once the operation finally happened the surgeon found that her intestine had perforated and had attached itself to other parts. So she had an ostomy for 3 months and surgery to repair. Well this was last month since then she has had to have another surgery last week because she got a blockage from scar tissue. Now she is still not ready to feed because she has a lot of output from her NG tube that is inserted to pull the bile from her stomach. She has had some bowel movement but not to the extent I think the doctors would like to see. I am concerned for my little baby because I don't know if she will have to have another surgery, because of how badly she scars after each surgery. I have faith and continue to pray everyday. Has anyone else out there had to experience this with a preemie or any other age child? And please tell me your experience.

What can I do next?

She is VERY high-risk for candida problems, especially if you havent been able to breastfeed her. Please see www.yeastinfectionadvisor.com for more information and talk to your pediatrician about this. Good luck & I wish your little one all the best.

I have a niece that has been dealing with a bowel problem for most of her life. Her stomach swells all the time. Her mom gives her enemas all the time and she has some kind of med that the doctor prescribed. It doesn't really help a whole lot. There's something missing. I wonder if it's anything you mentioned in your message. I'm going to search it out. She's 7 and she looks like she's pregnant. Not being funny, because she's my niece, but she looks like the kids you see on TV from Ethiopia or somewhere.

First, I want to say I feel for what you are going through. I had a 25 week 5 day gestational age micro preemie in March. I spent 9 weeks by his bedside in the NICU. I know the fear and frustration you feel. I will pray for you and your baby. It sounds like the doctors are on top of treating your little one. My baby did get NEC at two months of age which is not common after being on breast milk for nearly the entire time. Unfortunately all of his small intestines died and the doctors couldn't do anything for him. His illness came on rapidly and didn't end well. The majority of babies recover from NEC and I will pray that your baby overcomes her obstacles. Mine had other medical issues that were to his disadvantage when trying to recover from NEC. Good luck and God bless.

Hello V., I have not had a preemie but I have had a career of helping them. I am A NICU RN. From my experience with these children it all depends on how much intestine they lost and where it occurs. This is usally a long process to get them to full feeds and off of the IV nutrition. Along the way the majority of babies have set backs and need more surgery. Something to look into, especially if she has issues with her liver from the IV nutrition or TPN, is a program at Omaha, NE childrens hosp. They specialize is bowel issues in children. I don't have all the links at home with me but i will look at work to see if I can find some that could help you. I will pray for your family!

I gave birth to a preemie who was born at 26 weeks with an omphalocele (intestines outside of abdominal cavity at birth) and she had to have the omphalocele repaired at 14 months of age and will have to eventually have to undergo another surgery to complete the repair, she also has Cerebral Palsy and I am still trying to potty train her, she is now 5 1/2 years old. She remained in NICU for 4 1/2 months. She has several medical conditions and she does have problems with her bowel movements, she will sometimes go days with no bowel movements and they are sometimes very painful for her. I will keep you and your little one in my prayers.
