Post-treatment of Scabies

Hi Moms-

So, I had posted about winter itch way back in mid-January. I thought all the itching I was experiencing was related to the pregnancy and really dry skin. Boy, was I wrong! Shortly before my daughter's birth, Hubby went to see a dermatologist since he was itching too. The diagnosis was scabies. I was not happy at all - treated all the family with permithrin (sp?), washed tons of laundry (before treatment and after), waited a week and repeated the process. Of course, our daughter was born in between treatments and I had to pump and dump and give formula to her at three days old. What a mess!

Now, I am a little over a week out from the second treatment and I am experiencing a new symptom - small little "blisters" on my hands and feet. These blisters itch like crazy and the scratching keeps popping them open resulting in scabs. Some of the blisters seem deep to me. Others are shallow and very tiny, like needle pricks. Is this normal? Do I need a third treatment? I do not want to put my 2 week old daughter through this treatment too and am scared to death to pass this on to her at the tender age of 2 weeks!

Hubby seems to be getting relief from using lotion. I am not. I have called the dermatologist to try and get an appointment for myself buy they are telling me that it will be several weeks before I can be seen. Ugh. Can anyone give me some insight on this?

Thank you.
~C.

So What Happened?

Based on the conversation I had with the dermatologists nurse, in which she said it could be either dry skin or an eczema from the treatment and all the washings, I used some hydrocortison cream last night. It seemed to help a lot.

In addition, I got a phone call this AM from the dermatologist that there were cancellations and I was able to see her TODAY. I am so thankful! It seems that what I am experiencing is normal and the result of my body reacting to the dead "bugs". The dermatologist said that there were no new tracks (i.e. there are no new bugs) otherwise she would have requested a biopsy (the dermatologist does not have on-site facilities for this). She has prescribed a steriod cream to help with the itching and asked that I make a follow-up appointment in 2 weeks. She also assured me that since I had a treatment prior to my daughter's birth that both her and I are most likely fine and clear. I certainly hope so.

Thanks Mamas!

Have you told the dermatologist's receptionist that you have a new symptom and are concerned about your baby? Most medical clinics will give you advice, especially when they can't see you raw. Ask for the advice nurse.

google CDC scabies information to get accurate info about removing them. Scabies is a public health risk, you could be passing it to other people in your life and then they could pass it to someone else etc....

You need to take your baby to the Pedi asap, you need to call the dermatologist office and demand an appointment today! Tell them why you need the appointment and if they do not see you, you will call the dept. of public health. You can also call your primary MD, she can also treat scabies. Do not wait on this. Scabies is a public health issue

Make sure that your visitors and other family members have been checked and or treated by their doctor, because if they contracted it from you and then return to your home or you go to their home you can become reinfected.

When first infected with scabies, it could take up to 6 weeks for any signs to show, but you are still contagious before the signs and symptoms are apparent, so people could spread it before realizing that they have it.

Let us know what happens

I had scabies once when I was in high school. There was an outbreak in our school due to the young life ski trip, fun huh!? The most common thing is for scab like features to pop up in hands and feet. They like warm dark places and your extremities are the best for them. When you are in water, does it seem worse? I would def call another dermatologist and explain your situation, it is very easy to cross-contaminate and keep aquiring it. It is highly contagious. Your linens, furniture, car, pillows, anything and EVERYTHING has to be treated. I hope it isnt a re infection and you find some comfort soon!

Hi C.,

Melaleuca oil kills scabies safely. I've had a homeless person stay with us a few times and he always has scabies when he gets here and leaves without them. No one else in the house gets them. We use the Gold Bar (Melaleuca's alternative to soap) from Melaleuca and use their laundry detergent as well. He comes and gets a Gold Bar from me whenever he has a friend that gets them as well.....

PS It's healing as well and is healthy for the skin.
